The Kids Can be Good

One aspect of the progress I’ve made with the patio over the past couple of days actually has nothing to do with the project directly. And yet, without it, I could never have been so productive. The kids behavior has been exceptional.

Starting Tuesday morning, I worked straight through the day. Today, I went to my martial arts class and when I got home, worked straight through until it was time to get ready for the boy’s class. So we’re talking hours of time where the kids had little to no supervision, or refereeing.

During that time, they took time to get me water, since the past couple of days have been so hot. They also made themselves their own lunch, and also took the time to make me a lunch yesterday. They also helped prepare dinner last night, taking the food out of the freezer and doing the initial food prep. They’ve also aided in some quick grocery store trips, and trip to the pet store for dog food, emptied the dishwasher and put away their laundry.

Most importantly, they haven’t been fighting at all so I haven’t had to resolve any conflicts in a fatigued state. That rarely works well for them.

I don’t say any of this to brag, as I’m sure that in another day or two they’ll revert to their mean. But they’ve shown what they are capable of over the past couple of days. And that’s been encouraging.

A Quiet First Day

In many respects, today was like any other Monday. I had my martial arts class, I went to the grocery store, I did some chore around the house. Oh, and I sweated a lot because it was so ridiculously oppressive weather wise- not that that’s normal for a Monday. I just felt like complaining about it. The Wife left for a couple day business trip as well.

The main difference was I had the two shadows today.

I don’t think weekend really count in the whole Summer vacation thing, since they get every other weekend off during the year as well. Thus, today was the kid’s official first day of vacation.

It ended up being a pretty quiet affair. I let them watch some extra TV today since I figure a few days to decompress from the year is fair game. They’ve started watching back shows of Mythbusters on Netflix. This morning, they watched one of my favorites: the one where they blow up a cement truck. It was just as awesome now as it was the first time I saw it. The kids loved it too.

The day itself went pretty smoothly, with a minor hiccup in around lunch time where they got sick of each other. I broke them apart and had the lass doing some of her Summer work prep for 2nd grade and had the boy start reading The Magician’s Nephew. They spent about 45 minutes each on their work and then we got a surprise phone call.

The relevant background is simple- I was supposed to have pavers delivered here today. This morning, I got a call stating that they wouldn’t be arriving today. I was mostly OK with that, but then decided it better to say something to make sure that I didn’t continue to get bumped, so I contacted the rep I’ve been working with and he agreed. So to this point, I was expecting the pavers sometime tomorrow.

The phone call I got was from the rep telling me the pavers would be arriving in about 45 minutes. I was excited because now I wouldn’t have to worry about waiting tomorrow. The kids were excited because, well, something different. They had questions about the pavers- what the looked like, how heavy they were, how they went together and now they’d finally get a chance to see them up close an personal.

So that set off a flurry of activity as I shuffled some things around in the back and generally prepped to have the pavers on hand. The kids … got into their bathing suits and played with a hose. They were soaked from the hose. I was soaked from sweating and simply moving around.

After the pavers arrived, it was time for some dinner. We went with the old Summer favorite, hamburgers. Yum. The lass tried to weasel an ice cream promise out of me. I looked at her funny, asked “When did I say anything about ice cream?” at which point she gave me a goofy smile and shrugged her shoulders. She tried, but I wasn’t playing.

Our evening wrapped up with the boy’s martial arts class, a trip to the grocery store and a trip to Lowe’s to pick up a diamond blade for cutting the pavers. We finally settled down for the evening with more Mythbusters. We watched Adam and Jamie blow things up while some mild thunderstorms rolled through. The kids finally went to sleep in the basement, where it’s much cooler than their rooms. I’ll be sleeping in A/C tonight.

Not a bad day for starting the Summer vacation- no big fights, no major disciplinary actions, no real stress from the kids. But then, it’s only the first day.

The Lass’ Talent Show

It’s the end of the school year. I used to assume that simply meant school was getting out shortly. After this year, it will mean something entirely different- time for after school student presentations. We’ve had concerts and plays and assemblies. More recently, the lass had her First Grade Talent Show.

The Talent Show seems to be a rite of passage kind of thing for 1st graders. The boy also did it, and was The World’s Strongest Man. As I said at the time, who knew?

For the boy, we knew what his talent was going to be, if not how it was going to be presented. For the lass, we didn’t know what she was going to do. That was the way she wanted it as well. So she was a little upset with her brother when he unknowingly spoiled the surprise about her doing a dance. Apparently, he got to preview the rehearsal or something so he’d already seen her routine.

Even so, it didn’t really spoil the surprise since we didn’t know what her dance was going to be like or even what music she’d be dancing to. Turns out she danced to A Thousand Years by Christine Perri with a couple of her class mates. The were up there twirling and circling and moving to the music. She used lots of long, flowing movements which worked well because of her long limbs.

She got lots of complements from other Moms whom enjoyed the little routine. Unlike the boy, I wasn’t surprised by her ability to pull it off. She’s much more comfortable in the spotlight than he was at her current age. She looked perfectly comfortable up on stage in front of everyone and she was definitely the leader of her little group. When the dance ended, one of the other girls looked like she wanted to scoot off stage as quickly as possible. The lass beckoned her into the middle of the stage so they could take their bow as a group.

What else is there to say? That’s our girl.

Official Property Owners

Just a personal historical note of sorts. My first property was a small condo. When the Wife became the Wife, we actually lived in it together for a short period of time. I made a number of cosmetic improvements to it over time with the intent of renting it when we moved on to bigger and, hopefully, better things.

I’ve been renting it for over 10 years now, and have had a couple of real dud renters. That’s not been the case for a couple of years, thankfully.

Having mailed the final payoff check to the lender, I guess I’ll mark today as the semi-official day that we own the property outright. Which is nice.

For Your Amusement

One of the other Dad’s in our Cub Scout Pack told me about this video after our last Pack meeting with the model rocket launches. The kid’s expression is priceless. The Dad is too busy laughing.

Enjoy.

Wall 2 Completed

I can’t get a good picture of the whole thing, but these 2 should give the general sense of it. Having completed this one so soon after the first, I think it’s safe to say no two walls go up the same. Obviously, the shape changes. It’s more than that though- the material changes, the accessibility to the material changes (in other words, rocks on the top of the pile tend to get used first, rocks at the bottom last), plus the previous wall influences decisions about what’s acceptable and what isn’t. In this one, I used vertical rocks in a number of spots, versus the first I only did that in a couple of spots against the foundation wall.

That would be stage 2 completed. On to stage 3, which is the one I’ve been most anxious for.

The Weekly Patio Update

I’ve actually managed quite a bit of progress in the past week or so. I completed the excavation, over the course of the 3 hottest days no less. Additionally, all of the base stone has been filled and I’ve laid the first course of the wall. I’ve even started filling in behind the wall as well.

Worthy of note, I’ve added a catch basin to handle the our curtain drain. The original pipe posed a problem- the height of the pipe was going to interfere with the finished height of our patio. After speaking about it with a landscape guy, I basically had 3 choices: one, to cut and cap the pipe; two, to re-route the pipe; and three, change the height of the pipe using a catch basin.

The easiest was just to cut and cap the pipe. I also ruled it out almost immediately. Even though I’ve never seen water coming out of this pipe, I didn’t want to tempt fate. No, I wanted water to have some place to go. So, of the remaining two options, the catch basin was the simplest. The way it’s designed, I can even use a smaller pipe to make sure I don’t run into any problems with clearances.

If you’re wondering if I’m worried about the post on the far right, the answer is “a little”. I didn’t originally dig that close it it, but the dirt kept falling off. Luckily, with the wall going in now I’m less worried than I was since the back filling will shore things up.

As for wall features, it’s obvious this one is much longer but much shorter. Hmmm, that last sentence reads funny. What I mean is it won’t need to be as tall as the other wall, but it is much longer with the ‘S’-curve design. The height will gradually fade from about three-and-a-half feet at the house to about 18 inches at the other end. I’ll be following the same basic build process- build up the wall, then back fill with large stone and the three-quarter inch stone, cover with the landscape cloth and complete the back filling with sand and top soil.

One quick observation about this wall versus the other is I’ve been able to use larger stone more consistently on this first course. Looking at how the other wall came out, I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. On the one hand, the larger stone on the bottom theoretically makes the wall stronger. On the other, I think the randomness of rock size makes for a better overall look. That said, it’s early days for this wall. I seem to remember not knowing what to think of the first one and it ended up better than I’d hoped for. Perhaps the medium is the key and as long as I build it solidly, the appearance will take care of itself.

More of the Same- But Different

Completion of the other wall is only part of the project. Now, I get to do the same basic stuff on the other side. This wall will be easier in some ways, and more difficult in others.

As should be obvious from the excavation, it will have more curves to it. This will help to increase the patio area quite dramatically. Really, under the deck looks bigger already, excluding for the two massive pile of dirt I have in the center. But where it has the “S” curve feature, it won’t be nearly as tall- standing only about three-and-one-half feet at it’s tallest.

Aside from that, it’s more of the same. The next step is to dig down about a foot, line it with rip-rap and then fill with stone. Then I get to start building and backfilling.

Oh, almost forgot. I’ve also got to do something with that drain pipe. Don’t worry, I’ve got plans for it.

Model Rocket Pictures

Rather than post them here on the main page, because there’s a ton of pictures, I’ve created a page of it’s own to showcase a couple of the launches of the model rockets we made with the Scouts. For now, the page can be found this way. I’ll eventually make a permanent icon for it like the other pages.

UPDATE: Icon added. Can you guess which it is?

Stage 1 Complete

I tried to find a suitable quote from A Song of Ice and Fire but was unable to do so. So, suffice it to say, this wall is complete.

By the end, even the kids wanted to help. Mostly, I think, because they were able to climb up onto the top of it and “play.” I had them grading the backfilled area. If nothing else, it was an initial active load test to make sure the wall is solid. It seems to have passed with flying colors.

Next up, the other side of the house, where the next wall awaits. That one won’t be as high as this, but it will have more curves and, I think, be a little longer. I’ll enjoy this one for a day or so before starting the next one.

Wall Updates

The latest status on the wall. It’s taken shape nicely. I’ve got about another foot to go at the house side and I’ll taper it into the lower side as it comes around. Stone wall building is definitely a discipline where focusing on the details can get you in trouble.

The probably deserves a bit more exposition. Details are important in every project. In fact, the details make the difference between a successful project and an unsuccessful project. The trick is knowing which details are important.

In the case of stone wall building, I think a natural detail to pay attention to are the joints between rocks. This details lends to hunting for only stones of a certain size, shape and flatness. The problem is, those particular sorts of stones, at least in my project, are rare.

It turns out the more important detail to pay attention to is how it sets on the wall. The shape is almost completely irrelevant because other rocks can be used to build around the odd shape. Take a look at the picture closely and there are quite a few odd shape rocks. They end up being an accent, even though the rocks around them don’t necessarily fit exactly. In fact, the overall effect of the varying rock sizes and shapes, along with the gaps (assuming they aren’t completely egregious) makes for and overall nicer look.

The back filling has been moving along as well. I don’t think I have to worry about collapses so much anymore. I’m using landscape cloth over the stone filler to keep the dirt and sand from filtering down into the stone. That should help with drainage over the life of the wall. Which better be very long.

Just for the stone, I’ve moved about 12 tons of material I figure. I’ve gone through better than half wall stone and 5 tons of the 3/4 inch stuff. Still got a few tons to go as well. Then it’s on to the stage 2.

Homework

The boy had a miserable time with homework this week. He hasn’t melted down quite like he did in a long while. Tears and crying that he couldn’t do it, it was too hard, it was stupid. The Wife and I were finally able to convince him to walk away long enough for him to calm down.

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that shortly after that, he was able to finish his homework.

while he was suffering through it all, I realized this was the first time where I sympathized with him. There are times when a child breaks down in tears and my first thought is “This kid is trying to manipulate the situation.” That’s one of those survival instinct residuals from their infancy. When they needed something then, they cried. We parents try to wean them of that behavior as they mature. Who knows how long it takes.

This episode struck me as sincere. Not in the sense that he couldn’t do it, but in the sense that he was really struggling. He was putting effort into the work and it was frustrating him that he couldn’t finish it. Then, the frustration overwhelmed his still meager coping skills and he did the only thing left for a 9-year old when everything seems hopeless: cry.

Almost Too Tired to Post

The weekend has been exceptionally busy for me. Saturday basically started with me digging. I had to complete the excavation portion of the wall project because it was too difficult for me to find stone to fit in the few spots I had to work with. I couldn’t extend the wall further because excavation and refilling hadn’t bee completed. Thus, Saturday became that day.

That only took me about 4 hours of digging and then filling with rip-rap and then the small stone. By the time I’d complete that I only had a couple of hours to work on actually building it.

Because the lass had a softball game I had to go coach/pitch/work. The hard part was I wasn’t even sure she would have a game because I hadn’t received any confirmation from the Woodstock coach. I finally did get confirmation when I arrived at our field and he flagged me down to tell me that his girls would be ready to play.

Two hours later, the game was over and I was helping to prep the field for a Minor League Softball game. Then, it was back home to have some dinner and try to relax. Except the boy was having a slumber party with 2 of his buddies. Anyone who has had sleepovers knows there is no relaxing for the host family. The other families tend to sleep well though.

Today was more work on the wall, actual building this time around. I worked on that from 9 until 3:30 or so and then had to figure out a mounting scheme for the engines in the home made model rockets I did with my Cub Scout Den. Just when I though I was done, I remembered I had to go tutor high school chemistry at 8.

The good is I’ve made quite a bit of progress on the wall and hope to make more tomorrow. Unfortunately, I’m going to run out of filling stone, so that will hold me up for a day or so. The bad is there’s a lot more to go.

Mischief Managed

The boy finished the third Harry Potter book today, The Prisoner of Azkaban, so he got his wish and was allowed to watch the third movie. The lass pretended this didn’t bother her, but failed miserably at it. She tried to disguise her discontent by claiming that it wasn’t fair her brother could stay up later while she couldn’t. Knowing her though, it’s as much to do with that as her brother getting to watch the movie while she can’t.

I’d forgotten how enjoyable this movie was. By that I mean, had I not read any of the books, this movie, out of the lot of them, was the most interesting and entertaining in many ways. Perhaps it was just the one that lent itself the best to being adapted to the big screen. Perhaps it was the way they manage the ending, which yes was obviously laid out by the book. Still, there are plenty of examples of the movie adaptations screwing up the source material. Somehow, they managed not to do that with The Prisoner of Azkaban. The result was a well told story on the screen.

The boy is plunging ahead with his reading. He’s already started The Goblet of Fire. He figures it will take him 2 months to read it, since it took him 1 month to read this last one and it’s half the length of TGF.

Time will tell.

Highs Near 80!

The local weather guy is bragging about hi’s getting near 80, some time next week after the cool off from the rain passes. It’s going to be mid-May shortly. I’m having a hard time remembering the last time we had a May this cool. Usually we’ve had numerous 80 degree days by now.

I’m beginning to wonder if we really are experiencing “climate change”, just not in the way expected.

How to Fix a Window Regulator

I didn’t want to fix our cars window. I’d even called a “professional” to come do it. I’d done all the hard work for them, figured out the problem and procured the part. I explained what needed to be done and they were supposed to come out Thursday.

They no showed.

Actually, I ended up calling them late in Thursday afternoon and telling them not to come because we needed the cars at that point in the afternoon, so it would be a waste for them to show up. They assured me they would come by yesterday, in the morning.

Again, they no showed. To make matters worse, they have yet to call.

Not that it will matter at this point. I’ve already done the job.

After the jump is a description of the process I went through to change out the window regulator for a Toyota Matrix. No pictures though. I don’t think they’d be very helpful.

Prior to the instructions, for the curious, the window regulator is the mechanical portion of the window lift. It is basically a scissor with one of the arms fixed to the door so that the other, which is connected to the bottom of the window glass in some way, can raise and lower the window. A motor is attached to the “handle” side of the lifting arm. I believe the scissor arrangement also gives some mechanical advantage to the motor for lifting purposes.

The Next Project

The site of our next big DIY project. I’ve begun breaking ground today. First I had to clean some of that mess up though.

Details to follow at some point later when I deem it appropriate to start doling them out. Suffice it to say for now, this area won’t look like this for much longer.

Working on Writing

When I was the boy’s age and came home with writing assignments, my Mom would look over my work. I always handed it to her thinking what I had written made total sense. I was sure they were nothing short of a masterpiece.

The problem was, most of the time they only made sense to me. In addition to the grammar and spelling errors, Mom would hammer home the point that writing is meant to be read; thus, the writer needs to draw the reader into the writer’s world. This point seems obvious now, but when there are adventures to be had, games to be played, and mischief to be made, it’s not the sort of lesson that takes.

With that, I present the boy’s latest creative writing product:

Frank is a very interesting creature. He was not born with a nose but he has special gills. So he can breathe in any condition. He had one big, huge, raging eye. The other was lost in a fight. The creature had a blue body. He was thin like a human. He had a red head and green arms and legs. His wavy arms and a pair of stick figured arms. His arms would fly everywhere when the wind blew. He would also swing on branches that held his weight. Frank’s wobbly green legs had spiky points to help him stand. Frank smelled like hamburgers. The creature sounded like a T-rex when he roared. He moved faster than lightening. When Robbie saw him, he screamed “AHHHHHHHHHHH” all the way home.

Raise your hand if you laughed at the “hamburger” line. The boy is always thinking with his stomach, even when he isn’t.

The assignment was to write a description of an alien. I think there’s lots of good stuff in there. It’s also exactly the sort of thing Mom would have had me hammer away at for awhile. Obviously, there’s some sentence problems. Overall, it doesn’t flow well and it’s a little unbalanced- there’s a lot of stuff about Frank’s arms, but only a brief mentions of his eyes and the gills- arguably much more interesting features.

Given all that, here’s the rub. If I have him work on all that, is it still 3rd grade writing? If I don’t have him work on that, does he still learn to write better? Where’s the happy medium between the two?

Cool Again

It’s late April and we’re about to sink below freezing for the second night in a row. I’ve been running the fireplace in the evenings to keep the house from getting too cold. Checking the local forecast, looks like we’re gonna stay this way for another day or so.

The temptation to make a snarky “climate change” reference…

Ah hell- it’d be nice if we could just get some seasonal warming at the moment.

Signs of Spring

The weather has been cool here, as I guess it’s been everywhere. We even have some snow in various places throughout the yard. Despite that, where the Sun is shines bright the yard is greening up. The gardens are full of evidence that Spring isn’t far off.

A silver mound:

A bleeding heart:

Some day lillies:

Some other lillies:

A daffodil:

The kids have been spending more time outside of late. The snow that is left they’ve been trying to melt by hosing it down. They’ve also been having fun with mud, making mudballs and the like. It makes for extra laundry for the Wife and I, but it’s nice to be sending them out.

As for the cool weather, it will come to an end soon.
