My name is Gerry LaMontagne. I’m a former embedded systems engineer who chose to become a stay-at-home Dad. I’ve been an SAHD since August 2005. When I started writing here, our son was 5 years old and our daughter was 3 1/2.
My main interests include woodworking, electronics and computers, and bread baking. As for the woodworking, I have no formal training whatsoever. For a number of years I watched and enjoyed Norm on New Yankee Workshop. My own workshop slowly took shape over this time period, starting with a modest workbench, a cordless drill and and circular saw. I now have a fairly impressive workshop for a hobbiest, as well as a number of completed projects, ranging from picture frames to a dresser I made for my son. Most recently I’ve outfitted my wifes office with furniture, perhaps you’ll get a chance to see some of it…
The electronics and computer stuff should not be surprising, seeing as I’m an electronics engineer by trade. I worked as a designer for about 10 years prior to the kid-takeover. I continue to tinker with technology- most of it is Linux/GNU and open-source related. This blog is actually a direct result of that interest. But don’t worry, I won’t be preaching the virtues of Linux/GNU and open-source versus M$ here. My tact is to reside quietly with the understanding that the former is clearly superior (and more fun!) than the latter…
The bread-baking is something I’ve also done for a long-time now. I think it’s more of a habit than a hobby. Don’t take that the wrong way now, I enjoy the process, probably as much as the result! By habit, I mean more that the bread get’s consumed so quickly ’round these parts that I’m baking a new load pretty regularly. I’ve done the full gammot here- instant yeast to sourdough recipes.
As for this blog, I’m not sure what to expect from it. I never thought I’d do something like this, even though I’ve been reading blogs since 2000 or so. For a starting point, I thought I’d write about my woodworking projects as a means of documenting them, as well as some of my trials-and-tribulations related to being trapped with 2 toddlers fulltime. Perhaps this will become a regular habit for me as well… only time will tell.
And with that… on to blogging.
UPDATE: I’ve joined the masses of privacy advocates and have created a PGP key for mail usage. My public key is here.

Hey – if nothing else, it will be a nice diary to give to the kids when THEY are in the throws of child rearing challenges!

It is indeed my name, though I’m not French. I’m American, and the name is almost certainly French-Canadien.
