Add a Little Glue

Finally, today, a little gluing. A lot of milling and fitting and cutting and thinking has gone into this thing thus far. It’s funny, when asked about it I usually reply “It’s not that complicated, all it I’m doing is building boxes.” Well, taking a look at all the mortises in the posts and the tenons on the stretchers and the extra milling to tenons to get everything to fit together properly, it’s clear that it’s a little more than building boxes.

At this point, pictures are more clear than words, so here we go.

No More USC

At long last, we won’t be talking about USC in a national title game. Maybe the pollsters will even boot them out of the top 10! Stanford 55- USC 21. The best part is that they it’s a total blowout. Not even competitive in the game. Guess everyone will have to find someone else to fawn over while the usual suspects all talk about how and when USC will reclaim their “magic” or whatever other adjective they decide on.

Looks like the National Championship game will be the SEC title game between Alabama and Florida. I like ‘Bama in this one. Can’t really give any tangible reasons, just my sense of things right now. Obviously keep that grain of salt handy…

It won’t be this year, but perhaps next year we’ll finally see Ohio St fall from grace as well. They’ve had a pretty long run up there at the top of college football. Too bad for Iowa.

I wonder if there’s a discernable pattern of programs rising to and falling from elite status. Just off the top of my head- there was Nebraska and Florida St in the 90’s, now USC and Ohio St in the 00′, Michigan had about a ten year run, seems to me Texas is at similar point. Probably a completely unquantifiable combination of recruiting talent, hunger of said talent based on the programs success, and strength of competition. Basically the sort of thing that an avid watchers ‘gut’ might get a feel for. But then, note that I’m only observing the pattern using hindsight rather than boldly predicting the fall of these programs. Along those lines I’d guess at problems for Penn St, Florida and Texas in the next season or so.

The Drawer Slides

I didn’t get a chance to mention, but the Blum drawer slides have arrived. Holy moly, they are HEAVY. I pulled them out and now I can understand why they’re rated for 100 pounds.

The down side of their sturdiness is that they take up a lot of room. The upshot is that I’m going to lose at least an inch of space on inside height of the drawers because of the size of the slides. Normally, for drawers of the size I’ll be making for the armoire, I’d leave about 3/8″ to support the drawer bottom. With the slide size, I’ll have to leave considereably more so the slides can fit on the bottom of the drawer.

It’s a bit of a bummer because I had originally thought the drawers would be a little oversized compared to what I’ve seen for similarly designed armoires. That extra space is going to be used up accomodating the slides.

The good news is that I can definitely get some assembly done now. I’ll post pics when I can.

The Lass’s Phase

The lass is going through a phase. I recognize this phase because the boy went through it long ago. We survived his assault, I reckon we’ll survive her assault.

That doesn’t mean it will be more enjoyable the second time around.

Clearly there comes a point in a young child’s life where they really start to assert independence. Or at least the attempt to. Right now, the lass wants to control every aspect of her existence. What she wears, what she eats, which car she sits in, what games are played, who she plays them with, whether she gets ready for bed before her brother… Think of something and she has an opinion on her role regarding it.

Obfuscated C

When I started learning to program in C, I was fortunate enough to stumble across a gem of a book called “Expert C Programming: Deep C Secrets.” It has a picture of a selakant on the cover. The author has a great sense of humor, but most importantly it has all kinds of good tips for beginner C programmers looking to improve their knowledge.

In one particular chapter, he talks about the IOCCC. The first piece of code he writes about is the following was the winning entry from 1987 by David Korn:

main() { printf(&unix["\021%six\012\0"], (unix)["have"] + "fun" - 0x60); }

I actually compiled and ran it at the time and it prints the word “unix.” I was never able to figure out how the whole thing worked out though. Time passed and I forgot about it.

Well, not entirely. Today, while working on a piece of code, I finally thought to google the thing today. Lo and behold, there is an explanation for how it works. If you’re curious, here it is.

Quick Thoughts on Football

Having finished up thing fairly early yesterday, I got a chance to sit down and catch some football for awhile. The Patriot game was the only interesting one available and it looked to me like vintage Patriot football where they slowly strangle the other team as the game goes on. Even though theoretically the Dolphins were in the game, it never really felt like they had a chance. If the team continues like this, I won’t be surprised to see them in the Super Bowl again.

I watched about two thirds of the Cowboy/ Eagles game last night as well. When I turned it off, I was pretty sure that the Eagles were going to pull away. I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I saw that the Cowboys had not only won, but they’d managed the win in a way they’ve been unable to since Romo has been QB. He had a tough game last night but still managed to get the job done.

Of course, these were just the eighth games of the season, so there’s still plenty of football to play. For the Cowboys, December still looms. Unless they can actually win games then, they won’t be doing anything. For the Patriots, I wouldn’t expect them to have mental problems, but physically they’re an older team. The latter haf of the season will show how much those guys still have in the tank.

As a sort of one-off, kind of a bummer that Penn St lost to Ohio St this weekend. I thought they’d been looking pretty good this year- but they pulled a real stinker in that one. About time that Iowa lost. I was getting sick of hearing about them. Looks like the SEC championship will be the National title game as well. Sorry BCS, that’s just the way the ball rolls.

Learn to Skate

The boy had his first skating lesson today. The ice time lasted about an hour- although he and the 30 or so other first timers had all had enough after 45 minutes. There were no formal lessons or anything. The class basically consisted of suiting all the kids up and getting them on the ice. There were about 10 to 15 or so experienced skaters on the ice with them. They busied themselves by going from kid to kid making sure they all got a little one-on-one time. Mostly, though, it was obvious that the idea was to let the kids figure it out for themselves. That seemed about right. By the end, the boy actually finally did a little skating; regardless, he was cold, wet and ready to stop.

The most amusing moment came at the 45 minute mark when I happened to survey the ice. I’d say, conservatively, 90% of the kids were either laying, kneeling, or sitting on the ice. They’d all had it and were ready for ice time to be over.

Armoire Update

Having decided on and ordered the drawer slides, I had hoped I would finally be in position to get some gluing done. No such luck. I did finish the supports for the drawer slides which now leaves the drawers and the top as the main items left to works on. The reason I didn’t get any of the glue-up done is that I couldn’t get the material I wanted for the drawer separators and back.

The Boy’s Day

We didn’t actually mention his playdate to him until the morning of. Upon learning, he started vibrating with excitement. From that point, he was pretty easy to motivate through his brief morning at the house- he didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize going to his friend’s house. So after getting dressed and scarfing down a breakfast that I don’t think he really tasted, he settled into watching the TV and asking when we were leaving every 5 minutes.

BloGTK2- Follow-up

I posted a review about a month ago on BlogGTK2. I thought I’d add a couple of things since I’ve been using it for about a month now. Mainly, it’s crash prone. One scenario is writing a new post, posting and then attempting to start another post. This sequence will crash the program every time. This bug can be worked around by opening multiple windows prior to doing anything else. I use this trick in order to cross post between my two blogs.

Also, attempting to access the “Extended” or “Preview” tabs in the post editor causes the program to crash on my system. Kind of a bummer. The “Preview” feature isn’t really necessary so it doesn’t bug me. I work around the “Extended” crash by entering the HTML for extended entries manually in the “Main” tab.

Other than those stability issues, I don’t have any additional complaints. I’m still using it to post from my EEE and it works, within bounds I’ve outlined that is. I do wish there was better way for placing pictures in the posts, perhaps that will be added.

At any rate, it’s still better than the alternatives I’ve looked at. I won’t be leaving it behind any time soon.

A Play “Date”

Emphasis on date, definitely. The boy has been after me for the past few weeks because he’s been wanting to have a friend over. The first time he mentioned it, he claimed that the girl’s parents had already given permission and all we needed to do was let her come over. The girl’s Mom’s response to this news was “First I’ve heard of it” though it wasn’t the first time she’d heard the boy’s name.

Well, his friend got sick and missed some school so the whole thing was put on the backburner for a week or so. But he didn’t stop asking about having his friend over. I finally was able to speak with the Mom a second time and learned that the girl picks flowers to give to the boy on the bus because they usually sit on the bus together. For his part, the boy did a picture for the girl.

He picked a page from one of his dinosaur coloring books, took a red marker and wrote his name on the page with a little heart after his name. Then he drew a smiley face on the page and had me tear it out so that he could put it in his backpack to give to his friend.

So the two are set for their play date for Friday. The boy will be going to visit over there and they’ll be able to get on the bus together.

Should be an interesting day.

A Dish Best Served Cold

Actually, I served this one warm- too warm. The lass complained it was hot and she couldn’t eat it. I told her to stuff it- just not in so many words.

The great-lunch-debacle from the other day concluded today when I realized that there were leftovers in the fridge. For her part, the lass saw what I was doing and was hoping that I was preparing my lunch. When I explained what was going on, she started to protest. At which point I turned to her and made it clear that she would eat the food I was about to give her; that she would not be allowed to leave the table until the food was finished; and that there would be no negotiating whatsoever about the food. By the way her demeanor changed, she got the message and she ate, grudgingly.

I think that evens the score, for now.

UPDATE- Thinking it over, “debacle” really isn’t the right word. Perhaps “caper” or something…

Awesome Popup Run Prompt

With a little help from the obvious library for awesome, I’ve replaced the stock run prompt in awesome with a popup run prompt. The popup is nice for no other reason than it’s easier to see the command being entered since it doesn’t conflict with task list and the tag list.

The popup is actually pretty straight forward to work. Simply create a wibox with a prompt widget in it and initialize the visibility to false. Then, on whatever keystroke, switch the visibility to true and use a callback function to hide it on completion.

I’ve also leveraged the prompt so that I can launch uzbl at a certain url or with a search. Also, while uzbl is running I can use the popup to change the url.

The slickest thing about the prompt; however, is that you can specify a history file for each prompt use. Now I have a history that I can scroll through when I launch the prompt. The same technique works for search strings as well. Awesome.

Shopkeeping

I’ve added an “armoire” category under the woodworking category. My guess is there are plenty more posts and pic’s to come on this project, so that will be a nice way to pull all the posts up in one shot.

Visible Progress

img_1940

All right, here’s a shot of what’s been accomplished so far. Nothing is glued up here, everything is just dry fit. I still have to mill dado’s for the rear panel and I also have to put a taper on the adjacent inner sides of each of the posts. That will all be easier to do if it isn’t glued up. I’ll also put a fairly wide chamfer on the front corners of the posts. Again, easier to do if everything isn’t assembled. Mainly it’s assembled to make sure the panels don’t warp.

Outfoxed

The lass decided that she didn’t like dinner last night, so she refused to eat it.

The way she operates; however, is not nearly in so straight forward a manner. Instead, she sits there and dithers. Then she wants some milk. She eats some applesauce. She plays with the dogs and “rewards” them for doing tricks like “sit.” Then she says that she isn’t hungry. Five seconds later, she wants more applesauce. “But you weren’t hungry a second ago” we reply. “I wasn’t hungry for that.” she replies pointing at the food on her plate.

Progress

I don’t have time at the moment, but I’ve finally made some visible progress on the armoire. In short, I’ve got the frame and the side panels put together. What I’ll need to do for the drawers is also becoming more clear. I’ll be more specific tomorrow when I have time. I’ll also get a pic up.

Daylight savings was a nice treat for today. An extra hour, however manufactured, is always nice.

More tomorrow.

The Lass Speaks

Tonight was the boy’s night to be “squiggle butt.” He couldn’t sit still in his seat throughout dinner. He must have spun around 50 times if he did it once. If he wasn’t spinning in the chair, then he was on all fours with his rear in the air and his face looking at the floor. I can only assume that he was attempting to regurgitate for the dogs in some way, since they continually hovered around him whenever he struck this pose. I didn’t bother to look because, frankly, I didn’t want to know.

We asked him to stop his dancing repeatedly. At one point, the Wife told him “We’ll have to call you squiggle butt brownie.” That’s an oblique reference to Fudgy, in case you’re wondering. Of course the lass decided to chime in, agreeing with her Mom. She was just glad someone else was being referred to as squiggle butt. The boy retorted “Well you’re squiggle butt fudgy.”

To which the lass replied, fingering wagging, deadly-serious facial expression, her eyes sweeping between the boy and myself (who had not uttered a word throughout), with a calm assertiveness much beyond her 3 years “Now- Dad and “boy”, I told you two not to call me squiggle butt anymore.”

The Wife almost fell on the floor laughing.

Awesome 3.4

Given my last post related to upgrading awesome to the 3.4 version, I figure it’s only fair to give credit where it’s due. I subscribed to the user mailing list hoping for some help. I got it.

Quick … kudos to the mailing list guys.

The documentation is, unfortunately, lacking in this area. However, when creating a progressbar widget, which is all the my battery indicator is, the widget itself has a default layout of leftright. This setting is not overridden by the wibox setting it is placed in. To change it, specify a “layout” arg when creating the progressbar widget. Like so:

pb = awful.widget.progressbar({ layout = awful.widget.layout.horizontal.rightleft, … })

Now the widget is located where I want it in the wibox.

Also, when trying to attach mouse buttons to the progressbar widet, you have to access the buttons method through the widget as follows:

pb.widget.buttons(awful.util.table.join(awful.button…

So there you have it. Thanks to the mailing list for helping me out with this stuff.

Phillies!!!

I’m not much of a baseball fan. But when the Phillies walk into Yankee stadium and whomp the Yankees, well it’s certainly something I’ll notice. For many years Phillies fans were kind of embarassed to admit that they were, well, Phillies fans. My guess is a lot of them are still waiting for them to screw it up. Even after winning it last year, the circumstances were weird with the split 5th game and what not, so it didn’t seem like they ever got the credit normally due a World Series Champ.

Winning 2 in a row is a whole different thing though. People tend to notice that sort of accomplishment.

3 to go…
