Desktop Letter Drawer

Credit where it’s due- I got the idea for this from here.

img_1623

It’s overall size is (roughly) 14″W x 11″H x 10″D.  It’s almost entirely cherry, the two sides are maple, and the drawer bottoms are maple as well.  I used left over material from a variety of other projects I’ve done.  There are no glue-ups, all boards were chosen based on their being large enough to work without glueups.  Truth be told, I originally wanted to do the whole thing out of cherry, but I didn’t have enough stock that was wide enough to do the 2 sides and the top, so I opted to make the 2 sides out of maple.  The bottom is not solid- it consists of a front and rear stretcher piece and then 2 drawer runners, basically identical to the construction used to make the other drawer slots.

They got to me

Today the kids achieved another first.  I left a store before I was ready to because I couldn’t deal with their antics anymore.  Not exactly a first to brag about, but there it is.

I decided to stop in at a Bernie’s today to investigate new TV sets.  I went to look at the first few LCD’s, and the urchins laid down on the floor.  Minor annoyance, but manageable.  So I moved on to look at some other sets and the kids come tearing after me.  The daughter jumped in front of me and in the process almost trips a sales guy.  Little Miss Oblivious.  The salesman was good natured about it- “I’ve got big ones now but I remember…” sort of stuff.  In retrospect, it was only a matter of time from here.

Vocab Lessons

The kids have one habit in particular that drives me crazy. It’s one of those kid things that I remember doing and only now can I appreciate the patience my parents must have practiced with me and my siblings. The worst part is that you are captive to them in this situation because you’re all in the car together. And they are bored.

And then the “potty” language starts.

The Children's Museum

Today was the kind of day where your sweat sweats. The kind of day where you walk around with a coat of grime and you deal with it because well- what else can you do?

Find some A/C, that’s what.  Of course, with the kids I also needed a way to keep them busy. Bored kids are a difficult beast to deal with. Leave them alone for too long and they will almost certainly get into trouble of some sort. Creativity knows no bounds. So it was off to the Children’s Museum- where there is plenty to keep them going for the afternoon. Most importantly, though, they have A/C.

Weather

Heat. Humidity. Ugh.

Definitely the dog days of summer.  I keep hoping something will give weather wise, but now the heat wave is projected to hit day 7.  Of course, with the days noticably shorter at this point, I’d say it really is just a matter of time.

Till then… pleh.

Letter Drawer Finished

The last coat of tung oil has been applied to the little letter drawer I was working on, which means the project is completed.  I’ll try to get a picture and accompanying post about it up soon.

The Football Season Looms

As always at this time of year, I get a little giddy about the prospect of the worst sports season coming to an end and the best sports season beginning.  I am an unabashed fan of football, both college and pro.  The only thing I don’t care for is all of the ridiculous media hype around it all.

Blog Updates

I’ve updated the blog from 2.7.1 to 2.8.3 and it will likely become 2.8.4 since it’s a security update.

The change wasn’t all bad.

Because I’m running with Debian, some of the configuration details were moved to the /etc directory. It took me several minutes to figure out what stuff had to be moved over there from the config file in the blog directory. After that, I logged in and then the software performed some kind of database update- which caused some funny characters to appear in all the posts. It was too unacceptable for me to leave alone, so I went through the posts and corrected that. Now everything is back to normal.

Watch what you say…

We have a pellet stove to heat our basement. Of course, you need to fuel the stove with pellets. This year we purchased a couple of tons of pellets which, as of earlier today, were still sitting in our driveway. Not a good situation for the pellets, even though they are covered with a couple of layers of plastic. I know from past experience that the only way to keep the pellets dry is to keep them in something that keeps the water outside, and plastic wrap doesn’t do that.

EEE Auto login

I’ve removed slim as my login manager on the EEE and now just have it boot and automagically start X.  It was pretty simple, with a little help from this article from the knowledgeable debianadmin folks.

I’ll roll with this setup for awhile and see how functional it is.  Since I don’t have a need for multiple users on the EEE, I expect it will remain like this a long while.  Below the fold is a recap of what I did from the article.

No slim

Since I don’t have a full-blown desktop environment, I’ve been using slim as my graphic login for awhile now.  Unfortunately, I’ve always felt it to be slow and this annoyed me.  So last night I deep-sixed it.  I may go back to a GL later, but for now I’ll be fine with the command line.  Maybe I’ll spend a little time to figure out how to launch X upon login from the console.

Broken Awesome

The big advantage of using Linux, at least for a guy such as myself(geek) in a position such as mine(see blog title), is that I can make my computer, well, my computer.  That means I can run Gnome or KDE, or neither.  I can have as much software as I want, and no more, on my computer.  More than speed and stability, the ability to customize the computer is the single biggest point in favor of Linux, IMHO.  Of course, as many good things in life, it comes at a price.

Blog Excerpts

I figured out that the excerpting trick is performed in each blog post, so I’ve updated the longer posts to only show the first paragraph or so and then have a “Read the rest of this entry link.”

I have to admit, I’m feeling kinda stupid for not figuring this out quicker.

More Site Mods

Made a couple of site mods- added a category and search widget to the side bar, and rearranged the widgets over there as well.  I removed the search from the title block, or header, or whatever the technical name is.

Also downloaded version 1.5.4 of the Arclite theme, but I won’t be playing with it until later.

I’d like to figure out how to show the first paragraph from a post, and then have a “Read the rest of the entry” link, but I haven’t figured that out yet.

DIY Follies

I’m a pretty handy guy.  There isn’t too much in a house that I’m unable to fix when it breaks.  The only exception is plumbing- by which I mean copper pipes.  Faucets and toilets I can deal with.  Even things that I’ve never dealt with before I’m unafraid to tackle because I’ve done enough fixit projects and collected enough tools to feel comfortable that I’ll be able to get myself out of whatever trouble I get myself into.

Cartoons and a Sweater

I’m sitting here half-watching the cartoons the kids have on.  The Wife is finishing up a sweater that was initially meant for the boy but, because the pattern she followed resulted in something too small, is going to the lass instead.  She’s been very disappointed with the sweater because of the sizing issues.  My own view is the sweater is a nice looking sweater that she’s done a good job with- she can’t be held culpable for being misled on the size due to the pattern.  The lass likes it anyway, and the boy will get his own sweater after this one is finished.

EEE and esmtp

When I installed Debian on my EEE, naturally Exim4 came along for the ride.  Even then, I felt it was overkill, but lacking the knowledge I couldn’t find a suitable replacement.  So I stuck with it and set it up to send mail to my local intranet mail server.  This configuration was OK, but it was never really satisfying.  Why did I need a full-fledged mail server on a resource limited laptop?
