Mountain Out of a Mole Hill

Here’s the latest on the Jets tripping incident, courtesy Mike Florio.

Florio is jumping through all kinds of hoops to make this into some kind of sinister plot by the Jets. Rex Ryan had to know Florio insists. So did the special teams coach. So did Jet’s ownership. And the mascot. He even goes so far as to paint the elaborate procedure the Jet’s will go through if they actually have to fire the strength coach Alosi, who did the tripping.

But here’s the 500 pound gorilla. Even if they did line up on the sideline, if Alosi doesn’t stick his knee out and trip the guy, it’s a complete non-event. I’ll bet Florio doesn’t even notice the alignment without the trip. So the entire issue is the poor judgement of 1 guy- Alosi. Who cares how people lineup on the sideline. Does the NFL really need another obscure rule governing to enforce? One that would likely be unevenly enforced to begin with and almost surely subject to tremendous variance in interpretation by game officials?

Florio needs to find something else to yammer about. Alosi tripped the player and was caught. That will go a lot farther towards making sure it doesn’t happen again than anything Florio might want to happen.

No More Christmas Shoes

I was able to really capitalize on my Pandora subscription.

That stupid, insipid song The Christmas Shoes started to play on a Christmas station that the Wife had created. I banned it from the station before it got to the second note. I’ll be equally diligent with any other versions of that song the server tries to slip in.

Totally made paying for the Pandora One subscription worth it. In fact, the prospect that I can escape a Christmas without having to listen to that stupid shop owner get conned by the little kid over a pair of Christmas pumps makes me all “tingly” inside. Oh, and after the kid got those shoes off of that shop owner, he went down the street and scored some candy canes from the shop down the road for his “sick sister.” Then he went to the corner, lit up a cigarette and had himself a good laugh. That’s in the unrated version of the song.

Anyway, now I can have a Merry Christmas.

Stop the World…

…I want to get off.

The mind boggles.

The story actually gets interesting because the individual bringing the lawsuit is a “vegetable activist.” Meaning when she’s not suing McDonald’s over her inability to say “No” to her child, she’s busy telling everyone else what they should be eating. Obviously, telling people what to do is not the issue with this person.

Having taken the kids to each of the fast food restaurants, I can say that it isn’t exactly easy, believe it or not. Both kids are actually willing to sacrifice food quantity and remain hungry for the chance to get a toy in a happy meal. Both kids, given the opportunity, will actively campaign to go to a “restaurant that gives out toys.” Oh, and the Wife and I almost always force them to get apple or orange slices with the meal.

Which is why children don’t run things, and why any sane parent quickly builds a thick hide where their kid’s politicking is concerned. They will politic for whatever whim presents itself at the slightest provocation; and do so with a gusto that would make any rabid sports fan envious. Telling them “No” becomes easy with practice. If done enough, the kids eventually start to filter their desires themselves because they assume the answer- a plus for parental sanity. But a parent has to be willing to deny their little cherub its heart’s desire in the first place.

If this woman wants to teach anyone anything, she should start with her child and by telling her “No- you cannot have a Happy Meal.” It’s gotta be cheaper than the lawsuit, at least.

Good Question

Actually, Radley Balko asks a series of questions for Lefties. A good quick read for anyone I’d say. Via Instapundit.

I don’t expect many will answer that question honestly. It cuts to close. But I also think a lot of Republicans and capitalists would get tripped up by the question. If ours is truly a government of limited powers, then they have to start justifying social engineering and corporate law.

I don’t think many currently masquerading as “leaders” want to think about it at all.

Let Them Play

With all of the over-the-top bloviating about the Phillies getting Cliff Lee and now having 4 aces that would be number 1 pitchers on any other team, I think it prudent to point out that NO GAMES HAVE BEEN PLAYED YET. Remember how the Phillies were supposed to win the World Series this year because they had 3 guys pitching their best? Oops.

To trot out that old chestnut- that’s why they play the games. And that’s why they’ll still play the games next season, instead of just capitulating to the Phillies paper-awesomeness. As I recall, the Phillies could’ve used some bats this past offseason.

Pats vs. Bears

This is ridiculous. No- that’s not quite right. It’s pathetic. It’s worse than pathetic. The Bears don’t even belong on the same field as the Pats. And aren’t the Bears supposed to have a good defense or something? Sheesh. They haven’t given anybody a reason to even watch the 2nd half of the game.

To say that the Pats look like the team to beat is hardly an original statement at this point. I had my doubts earlier in the year. But right now they are the only team I’ve seen that’s getting better. Particularly, their defense appears to be turning a corner. If that happens, it’ll take a ridiculous effort by some team to beat these guys.

Chrome OS

I’ve been hearing a lot of rumblings related to Google’s Chrome OS, but I really didn’t understand what all the hub-bub was about. I figured it was a minimal sort of software OS, but beyond that I really didn’t know much more and hadn’t seen anything to offer clues.

Here’s the first article I’ve seen giving a reasonable high-level view of Chrome. The idea is really simple- the browser becomes the UI.

Google has also made a lot of other decisions. For instance, there is no hard drive, therefore no local storage. All storage is online. This takes away most, if not all, of the customizations associated with computers. All computing is accomplished via cloud computing- funny how computing is going back to its roots as essentially dumb terminals hooked up to a mainframe. Obviously, there isn’t a mainframe involved here- rather some server and the terminals are a smidge brighter than “dumb terminals.” But not by much.

The article also mentions current problems with Chrome applications. More specifically that more are needed. Though if Chrome catches on in any kind of way, I expect that problem will take care of itself.

There’s currently no pricing info available. With the reduced hardware requirements, I expect it will be cheap- at least netbook cheap. Chrome could push entry level computing below the threshold the current crop of netbooks has established. Especially with the likes of Acer involved. I’d expect to see it in tablet computers as well, possibly even higher end cell phones though at this point no touch-interface UI functions are available.

Based on this reading, Chrome isn’t something that I’d be interested in. I like being able to make the computer do what I want it to do. In my world view, computers are supposed to be flexible. Chrome to offers flexibility on it’s own terms. But apparently that’s considered a feature, not a bug. Google might be right- I’m under no illusion that I’m representative of the computing population. It will be interesting to see if it catches on.

Best Hockey Goal Ever

Given the boy’s involvement in youth hockey, I’ve found myself more frequently taking note of hockey related highlights. Via Deadspin, here’s a great one:

I wonder if that’s ever been attempted in the pros?

A Thought About Taxes

What happens if this latest tax deal is passed, and then the economy turns around (as just about all pundits seem to think will happen)?

I ask this because it occurs to me that the Democrats had there shot at a stimulus plan that has failed (not that they’d admit to that). At least, I’d say that’s certainly the perception. So now, we cut taxes and the economy picks up. Doesn’t this give Republicans a real world argument about the efficacy of tax cuts versus spending as stimulus?

I’m sure that amongst Democrats, the answer will be obvious. But what will be the takeaway from the public at large? Will they look back and say “Hmmm, spending stimulus didn’t do anything, but low tax rates got things turned around!”? Are Democrats prepared to lose that argument empirically for a generation?

For myself, I think the economy is in a state such that there is a decent chance that tax cuts don’t work. But if they do, it seems to me the Democrats stand to lose some credibility on their purported economics chops. If that comes to pass, how ironic is it that it happens due to the efforts of a Democrat in the White House?

Urban Meyer Retires Again

I really want to believe him when he says it’s all about family. Having read a couple of items from the press conference and noting that he has basically missed his daughter’s athletic careers, he certainly sounds like someone who means it. The fact is that the sentiment he expresses is one of those that everyone agrees is noble, but few in practice actually choose that path. It would be nice just from the standpoint of someone choosing to step out, arguably at the top of his game, just to reaffirm that it is possible to choose family over the dream job.

But there’s still that nagging little voice in my head saying “Unexpected resignation at big time school equals NCAA sanctions to come.” I guess we’ll find out in the months ahead.

Life Imitating Art

I got upstairs to check on the toothbrushing progress prior to bed and the lass is screaming at her brother. When she settles down, she explains that her brother “got soap on her toothbrush.”

Flummoxed by the oddity of the statement, I asked her to explain. She said the boy had put soap in her toothpaste tube. She pointed to the soap squirt bottle behind the sink.

And it was all I could do not to laugh right then and there.

Change

Does anyone else remember Democrats claiming that the Bush Tax cuts were the root of all evil? They caused heart burn, indigestion, upset stomach and diarrhea. The cuts were tilted towards the rich(aren’t the “rich” mostly Democrats nowadays?) They caused the Arabs to hate the Jews. Oh, and global warming and bad breath.

Now, a day after President Obama cut a tax deal, the tune has changed. The tax cuts are the “second stimulus” they’ve been pining for lo these many years. They’ll help increase GDP by as much as .75% and pretty much cement the President’s reelection chances. They are a brilliant compromise where he snatched strategic victory from tactical defeat.

So did anyone else notice that? or is it just me and my fevered imagination? Perhaps that’s what is meant by “nuance.”

Congrats

To the boy, who earned his school patch at karate last night. To do so, he had to memorize and then recite the 5 lines of his student creed to one of the black belt instructors for his class. He deserves full credit because it was all on his own initiative- once he understood what was required of him. The Wife and I repeatedly told him it was his choice and he could wait a little bit to become more comfortable with the lines prior to attempting. Regardless, he worked hard at memorizing the lines, and even took the initiative to tell the instructors he was ready to try.

Well done, kiddo. Well done.

Great Game Kid- Don’t Get Cocky

A week ago, the San Diego Chargers blew out the Colts in a dominating performance. This past weekend, they lost and looked awful doing so to the Raiders.

Last night, the Patriots annihilated the Jets. To be honest, I wouldn’t have predicted that even in “maybe possibly” kind of way. I watched the first half and the Pats were all over the Jets. It was as good a performance as the Pats have had in a big game.

So now, it’ll be their turn in the hot seat. With a leader like Brady on the field Belichik off, I wouldn’t expect a let down game from the Pats. But sometimes, that’s just how it happens. They’ve got a young defense that played their best game of the season last night. If I was forced to predict “letdown,” then that’s where I’d predict it coming from for the Pats.

You’re only as good as your last game in the NFL.

A Fine?

Mike Florio thinks that the Raven’s defensive lineman who broke Roethlisberger’s nose will be fined.

Why?

Here’s an animated gif showing the play in question. The lineman brings his arm up and over an offensive lineman so he can wrap up Roethlisberger to get the sack. Because his arm is up, it goes through the open portion of the facemask, causing the broken nose. The officials didn’t even flag the play.

Now, perhaps a 5-yard incidental facemask penalty could have been called since the tackler’s hand goes to the facemask. But he doesn’t grab it, even for a second. It immediately drops down to Roethlisberger’s body to complete the tackle. And, as stated before, the only reason it was up was because he was bringing it over the top of an offensive lineman.

For the more surly of the Steeler fans out there, I’ll say it’s Roethlisberger’s fault. If he hadn’t ducked his head then the lineman’s hand wouldn’t have hit him there in the first place.

So there’s no rational way to ascribe intent, and the closest rule infraction is an incidental facemask. There’s nothing there.

So why should there be a fine?

UPDATE: Fixed the link to the animated gif.

UPDATE2: My brother has corrected me- any kind of head contact on the QB (I assume while he’s a “passer”) is a personal foul penalty. So the Raven’s D-lineman should have been flagged. I still maintain he should not be fined for the play.

Kids are Machines

We were invited out last minute to a friend’s place for a little holiday gift exchange. We had to come up with a “White Elephant” and an “Ugly Decoration” to participate in the festivities. Being last minute additions, we didn’t understand that we were supposed to each bring along these items. Fortunately, our gracious hosts gave us a pass on that one.

The kids were also invited and all told there were about 7 or so of them from age 4 to maybe 8. They were all very good- entertaining themselves and not destroying the house in the process. That’s always a concern. Heck, I think the fabric of reality is in the balance sometimes.

Anyway, we were there late and ours finally gave out while watching a movie. When the movie ended we packed them up and headed home, both of them fast asleep in the car.

Despite the late hour, the pitter-patter of little feet was heard this morning around 6 or so. Down the stairs they went to check on the Advent House and to seek out Sparky. They came back upstairs, but they didn’t go back to sleep. I got up some time after that when I finally admitted to myself that I wasn’t going to get anymore sleep.

As I stumbled down the steps, the kids followed quickly thereafter. Bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Arguing over what cartoon they would watch, then deciding that Netflix was the best option.

I don’t think they really “stop”. They just kind of pause, and then continue on. The Energizer Bunny has nothing on them.

Auburn-Oregon for #1

Both teams took care of business yesterday. I’ve yet to see Auburn play, so I don’t have any feel for how good they are. I’ve watched Oregon play and I know they are good. Seems like a game worthy of a little hype. Using some completely unoriginal analysis, I’d say a game that’s close into the 4th favors Oregon because of their style of play. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cam Newton give Oregon’s defense fits.

Like I said, a game worthy of some hype.

I suppose from the perspective that the BCS is supposed to give us a 1-vs-2 matchup to streamline determining who’s the best, we have to give credit to the BCS for working this year. Of course, if it can’t work this year then it can’t work any year. No arguments for playoffs this year. But next year is only 10 months away.

It always amazes me how quickly the college football season passes. I have a vague sense that the season should be hitting full stride right now. That big games are just over the horizon. But, obviously all those games have been played. I don’t actually get to watch a lot of college football. Typically, by the time I can sit down and watch a game I’m too tired to really get into it. Kids’ll do that to ya. Perhaps that’s why I don’t feel like the season should be ending.

So I’ve monitored the season, for the most part, from right here. Checking out scores and highlights the morning after. I know that I missed some amazing games this year. Actually, this year in particular, there were great games every weekend. No. That’s not quite right- there were multiple great games every weekend. I don’t recall a year like this where, checking the scores and recaps, so many games came down to fantastic finishes. Easily one of the most entertaining in recent memory.

Be that as it may, it now draws to a close. The game slate will drop off a cliff. Starting around Christmas, we’ll start getting a slow, steady diet of bowl games. Some of those will probably be good games as well. Then the New Year will pass by and with it the season will be over.

I’ll just have to enjoy what remains.

Honorary … Something

For Cub Scouts, the boy has a number of things that he has to memorize. Among them a handshake, a salute, a promise, and the Law of the Pack.

For his martial arts, he has to memorize the five lines of the school creed, as well as what the school flags are and various forms.

All in all, he’s doing pretty well learning all of these things. But the Wife and I both have also had to memorize all this stuff in order to help him learn it all. I’ve even been learning the forms to help him out.

Funny how that works.
