A Quiet Day

It’s a quiet day here on the farm. Just me and the lass for the now. The Wife is business tripping and the boy is sledding at school because that’s what we send him there for. I’ve got some grocery shopping today, perhaps I’ll prep for some ciabatta for tomorrow. Haven’t made that in awhile.

My power supply and heatsink should arrive today. Perhaps there will be some ‘puter‘ work for the later.

Armoire Drawers

I finished the second drawer this weekend and I’ve got a good start on the third one. The second drawer is far superior to the first one. I’m aiming to make the 3rd drawer the best of the three.

I’ve got some pics and a more elaborate writeup coming, just not tonight. It’s getting late and I need some time to put the post together.

Cowboys-Eagles

Man, that was a disastrous 2nd quarter. I’m betting on the Eagles coming out on fire in the 2nd half. I’m not hoping for that, but I tend to think that’s the way this will play out.

It’ll just be a matter of whether the ‘Boys can hold them off.

UPDATE: That touchdown run might have finished this one. There’s still a lot of game to go with 5 minutes left in the 3rd, but the Eagles have to score now. The Comboys fumbling interceptions away isn’t too smart…

Best Burger Ever

The rules for a good sandwich are pretty simple:

  • Has to be sloppy…
  • …but not so sloppy that it can’t be held together
  • Naturally, it better taste good
  • The eater should be sorry when its gone
  • The eater should feel a little guilty that they ate it

The burger I had today was a bison burger at Ted’s Montana Grill. The name of it is ‘The Kitchen Sink.’ Now, it’s not quite that audacious. But still: bacon, grilled onions, mushrooms, tomato, pickles, Jack cheese, ham, and a fried egg. When I ordered, the server gave me a half “OK” and half horrified look. I don’t think she even liked serving it. The Wife didn’t like looking at it. Probably because it looked like a coronary on a plate. It had to easily top 1500 calories. It took me a good couple of minutes to figure out how to tackle it.

When I finally picked it up, the egg broke and coated the whole thing in yolk- as well as a good portion of the plate. But, once I finally started eating it- just … WOW. Heaven on a bun. I sopped up the drippings on the plate. I licked my fingers. I savored every bite. I didn’t dare put it down because I was not going to be able to pick it up again. The Wife coudln’t believe I ate the whole thing. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t more of it.

Did I feel guilty about eating it afterwards? Yes- like I said, it had to be worth 1500 calories. How could I not feel guilty. I didn’t even bother to have dinner.

4 stars. 2 thumbs up. Go find one for yourself.

Question About Scheduling Posts

Alright, I’m going to write this down in the hopes that someone stumbles across this stuff with some kind of explanation.

I’ve been working on support for scheduling posts in my blog client. I thought I had something working- I used it to schedule 2 posts for the minute before and then right at midnight on New Years. Subsequent attempts to use the scheduling did not work. So I started searching for more details on what the date/time format needed to look like.

Overturning the Consensus

Glenn Reynolds linked to a very interesting article about vitamin D and exposure to the sun. I won’t summarize the article, as it is a summary itself of the process by which the past 40 years of scientific consensus regarding exposure to sunlight been overturned. It’s worth a read.

I’m commenting on it because it seems to me that the pattern described here is a familiar one. A lone individual decides not to take conventional wisdom on faith. That person basically spends a lifetime carefully researching and documenting a new train of thought. He is rigorous, because he has to be, and his research is better, because it has to be, than what has come before. Combined with some other fortuitous events, he is able to finally break through and demonstrate that the conventional line of thinking is, if not compeletly wrong, then at the very least not right.

In the wake of climategate, I’m thinking it will take a similar effort by some individual, or uncoordinated but related efforts by multiple individuals, out there to develop a better picture regarding climate change and the impact of man-made carbon dioxide on it. I wonder if that individual is out there now, or if climategate has spurred him to action? I also wonder what irreversible damage will be done before it happens.

Missed Christmas Gift?

The boy and the lass have been playing with rubber gloves that the dental hygienist gave to the boy at the end of our visit a few days ago. And by playing, I mean constantly playing with the gloves. They’ve been having adventures of all sorts all afternoon.

The latest adventure has been attempting to blow up the glove by any means. They even tried using a bicycle pump. The boy got so frustrated by that scheme that he yelled “GOD- next time make me better so I can blow up this stupid glove!”

We’ve obviously screwed up the whole Christmas gift thing. On the plus side, at least they’re resourceful.

Double Bollucks

One of the pitfalls of ordering ordering components for a PC is it’s easy to confuse what is necessary versus what is delivered. I imagine if I did this more I’d have a better eye for that sort of thing- a mental checklist.

So naturally my motherboard and friends arrived today only for me to realize that I’m missing a rather important part.

The heatsink.

No building anything yet.

UPDATE: Triple Bollucks! My current power supply isn’t up to snuff either.

Bollucks

Truth be told, I wasn’t entirely disappointed the other day when my desktop computer failed. I knew my data was OK so I wasn’t worried about that. I’ve always used hand-me-down computers and the thought that I finally had just cause to get myself some technologically up-to-date hardware was exciting for me.

I had been looking around and had kind of determined that changing motherboards and hardware was not a terribly difficult thing on a Linux system. Basically, it came down to making sure that the proper kernel was present on the harddrive and that the bootloader could find that kernel. Given that the current system is functional enough for me to install packages, I was confident I could make the transition relatively painless.

Certainly less so that for a Windows box.

Made it to Tuesday

Well, we made it to Tuesday.

The first day back from vacation is always a drag. So naturally, this year, we didn’t waste any time getting back into the swing of things. The lass had her new dance class, the boy had school, we had our chiro appointment, the Wife had work and I had racquetball.

The timing from dance class to school was such that I had to pack a lunch for the boy so that he could eat it while enroute to school from the Y. Last night’s racquetball match was at 8:30. At least, it was scheduled for 8:30. We actually started closer to 9 and didn’t end until after 10. I finally got home around midnight and then had to deal with the fire.

But it’s Tuesday now, so it’s all downhill from here. Just another 360 days or so to go…

The Snowman

The boy and the Wife teamed up to make a snowman this morning. They had so much fun that the lass decided that she had to join in the fun as well. Previous, she had declined the chance to go outside in the snow because, well, I guess because she’s at that age. Still, she wasn’t going to let her brother one up her in snowman making.

No More Cartoons

Well, not completely. However, we’ll be drastically reducing TV time. I used to think that we kept their TV time to a minimum. The Wife and I have been talking and we’ve come to the conclusion that it isn’t minimum enough.

Both kids have shown certain attitudes that Grandma is very certain they get from cartoons. The idea didn’t always have much credence with me. But in thinking about it, certain behaviors are very similar to the characters they watch on TV.

So, I guess I’ll have to consider this a New Year’s resolution. Perhaps that will help me to follow through on it with the kids.

One Down, Two to Go

I finally finished the first drawer. No pictures. I’m a little disappointed with how it turned out. The tails aren’t as tight as I wanted, plus when I clamped everything together I didn’t seat the pieces entirely. In the past I had overclamped drawers, I didn’t want to repeat that mistake here. The result was that the tail boards didn’t seat flush with the pin boards.

Wow, Just… Wow

Well, my computer started running again today. I couldn’t believe it. When I had finally given up on it the other day, I figured the next time I’d get a chance to see a run prompt was after I’d installed a new motherboard.

There are a number of strange things about this failure. First, all of the segfaults prior to the problem. Second, I must have attempted to reboot about a dozen times without success. It couldn’t even find the various mount points so the times that I got a prompt, I could only peform basic shell commands like ‘ls’ or ‘cd’. Real fancy stuff like ‘cp’ was completely unavailable. There was also the strange CMOS error that occurred one time.

One of Those Days

Today started out like any other- I got out of bed and had coffee. Woopee. My plan was to finish assembling the drawer I’ve been working on. I was on the last set of half-blind pins. After that, I just had to get the drawer bottom glued up and the grooves for the bottom milled into the drawer sides.

It’s cold up here. The day started at 19 and the temp fell as the day wore on. To make the garage a little more comfortable, I went to get a propane tank filled up so I’d have some heat out there. After I got back, the Wife went grocery shopping and I started in on some other chores.
