I had a terrible, awful, miserable racquetball match last night. I was so upset with how I played that I forgot my racquet at the club when I left. I didn’t even realize it until I got a call (I was over half-way home at that point) from one of the guys at the club who told me he’d stashed the stuff in his locker.
When I finally got home, the boy was still awake so I got a chance to say goodnight to him. He asked me how my match went. I told him not so good and that I lost all 3 games. Then he asked me:
Did you have any fun?
I told him, truthfully, no I didn’t.
Well, next time make sure to have fun. Right, Dad?
I kissed him goodnight.
I wasn’t so upset anymore.

What do they say: “from the mouths of babes” or something like that. Kids really see right through things like adults have forgotten to do. Hopefully he remembers his words when his time comes. I wonder?
I can certainly say it was completely unexpected. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played him and he’s been on the verge of tears because he wasn’t winning. Happened just the other night in Battleship. Point being, he wasn’t on the list of people I expected to hear it from.
