Miscellany

The weather up here got cold but we never would’ve known it here in the house. I had been maintaining a fire in the fireplace, until today. The last two days the average indoor temp had to be around 78 degrees. That was oppressive enough that the wife was complaining about the self-induced heatwave. Heck, it didn’t get that warm in the house during the summer. I thought I had figured a way to regulate the indoor temp; obviously I was mistaken. It was actually pleasant to go outside and get a blast of cool air for a few minutes. It’s a pain, but I’ll go back to starting a fire each night until the current cool-snap ends.

We signed the boy up for hockey. He’s not actually going to play it, yet. First he’ll get some ice time to learn how to skate. Then we can put a weapon, I mean stick, in his hands and he can learn how to play the game.

But either way, he needs skates… and elbow pads, shin pads and a helmet. Luckily, when we signed him up one of the parents told us about a place that had a nice deal on starter equipment. That worked out well as we were able to save a little money on our overall purchase, plus we learned a little about how the stuff is supposed to fit. Amusingly, he’s got a big noodle; they had to put him in a medium helmet which they don’t see too often in one so young. Hockey is definitely an expensive sport though. One of the parents told us that a competitive league can cost $1200 around here. Luckily, that’s a few years away, if it’s even in his future.

For his part, the boy seems excited. He spent the early part of the evening walking around on his skates. Naturally, he also had to wear the elbow and shin pads as well as the helmet. It made for an amusing sight. He enjoyed it though. If it’s any indicator, he may make it past his first fall on the ice.

Racquetball started up this past week. Naturally, the strings on my main racquet snapped so I had to go with the back up. I didn’t play too badly, but there was definitely some rust there. I paid for it the next day; I was sore all over. Hopefully the main racquet is ready by the time my next match comes on Monday.

I was finally able to get the rental ready to go. I’m going to try a universal remote for the garage door opener to replace the one lost by the last tenant. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to install a new garage door opener. Anyway, the realtor is going to start listing it so hopefully we’ll get someone in there before too long.

I’m finally getting a chance to watch a little football. Think I’ll take advantage of the opportunity.
