Really?

Has anyone seen the new commercials for the Windows 7 phones? The ones where people are standing around using their phones when they should be doing other things? (One guy drops his phone in a urinal and bends down to pick it up, prompting another guy to say “Really?”)

Does anyone really believe the premise of the commercial? The new phone from Microsoft is so super-fantastic that it will reduce the amount of time people spend on their phones.

Perhaps someone should remind Microsoft about their Kin phone- which people spent so much time on that Microsoft was forced to humiliatingly can it only weeks after launch. That’s what happens to phones that people don’t spend any time on.

The whole point of a smartphone is that people use it. If their new phone is as well thought out as that ad, then it will probably being joining the Kin in a few months.

You can’t blame them for trying ….
If it weren’t for all those monthly charges, I’d seriously consider an iphone … but now, I’m content with my laptop … which, despite its ‘bulk’ – still gives me all the info I need, allows instant online access to data, and doesn’t cost me montly access fees [except those incurred by the cable bill …. 🙂

It all depends on what you do…but yes, the premium is a deterrent.

In terms of your original post, when I company releases a limited amount of a particular product, and that product does not catch on, it is easy to pinpoint it as a failure…don’t forget the ESPN phone, a huge failure, remember the iPhone 3G, a month later they released the 3GS because the prior version was a flop, and I am sure, given the quantity available, that there are more than a dozen Android based phones that are flops, were flops and will be flops. I am being very conservative there, because a dozen is probably not even half the right number.

All this said, phones cost nothing to manufacture, the pricing is in the advertising, so, if it works, the phone sells and they make a profit based off the kick-back they get from the providers who power the phones. At the end of the day, they could care less if a phone flops, it is more about getting people to sign up for service and maintain their contracts long into the future. They only want you to own a phone for 6-12 months anyway, then they want you to buy a new one.

So, despite your passionate hatred for Microsoft and the fact that they run the world of computing, this phone, is some way will be a success. Just like, in some way, their last one was, and in the end, so will their next one. Also, Microsoft and Windows will continue to run the world of computing because they have the money and the power to attempt a foray into any technological field that they feel fit.

I think you are still too charged up from the elections, this post seemed emotionally charged with post-election animosity, you needed to vent, you took it out on your old foe and now you are faced with the ramifications.

If you really wanted to vent, vent on the fact that Sears has been advertising for Christmas since before Halloween. Now that is BS…

Microsoft doesn’t run the world of computing, they just have good PR.

As for the phone, what I’ve read indicates that it doesn’t actually suck. I’m merely pointing out the ridiculousness of the commercial, because clearly, MS wants people spending all their time on MS phones as opposed to Apple, RIM or what-have-you.

MS still sucks- it doesn’t matter how many times you try to say otherwise. Even though Mythbusters says you can, in fact, polish a turd, the MS turd can’t be polished because the stench is so fierce you can’t get close enough to touch it. And then, on the off chance that you do, well, we all know what happens when you disturb a turd… it stinks more.

As a matter of fact- I thought I smelled something when I got home. Now I know what it was- your comment. See? Don’t touch turds…
