The Guy

At his first day of Lego camp, the boy learned how to build cars and build houses. He said they even built a house. Or at least the walls to a house. More specifically, he said they learned how to build the walls. By overlapping the blocks on each new level.

I was stunned.

I had Lego’s at his age. My Dad taught me how to do exactly that. He even demonstrated the superiority of the technique by having me build my wall, him building his wall and then compare results. Upon seeing how easily mine fell apart versus his, I realized I had been bestowed wisdom and I built them that way ever since.

So naturally, when the boy started showing interest in building with Legos, one of the first things I showed him was how to build a wall by overlapping the blocks.

Clearly, this was the wrong thing to do.

What I should have done was pay $150 or so to send him to a camp where some other guy would explain the exact same thing so that the boy could listen to him. Then, he would have known all of this time how to properly build a wall with Legos. Plus, now he can build cars too.

So now I’m thinking that I need to hire a “guy” that I can plant at various point in the boy’s life so that when wisdom needs to be bestowed upon him, I can tell “The Guy” what to say.

Probably wouldn’t hurt to attain some wisdom first. But at least this way I’ll know that I’m not wasting the effort…
