More Stuff That Doesn’t Suck

I’ve had these LL Bean 3-in-1 Gore-Tex mittens for 3 years now. I use them for anything except handling firewood when outside. They have a lighter glove liner that come out of the mitten and is sufficient for just throwing snowballs or general light use. For snow plowing and shoveling I wear the liner and the mitten and my hands do not feel any cold at all. Also, though the glove will get wet from melting snow, it does not penetrate the glove at all. The wrist strap is nice to make sure the mittens don’t slide off my hands and the long gauntlet easily stretches down over my wrists and keep snow from getting inside the mitten. Aside from making sure that they don’t get lost between seasons, I don’t treat them particularly kindly- though I don’t abuse them either. They are pricey, but assuming I don’t lose them they will be the last mitten I ever wear.

I was never a fan of Georgia Boot because I thought they looked like snazzy, mass produced work boots and I, therefore, assumed they were completely non-functional and cheap. I purchased a pair similar to these this summer last (my G8182 model doesn’t appear to be made anymore). I decided to give them a try on the recommendation of the shop owner whom said this particular boot was extremely popular. Plus, it was all they had in a size 15.

They have proven my assumptions regarding Georgia Boot completely wrong.

First, the boot is the most comfortable I’ve ever owned. I’ve been living in them this Winter and my feet do not hurt or feel tired even after wearing them for 12+ hours straight. Second, the boot is extremely rugged. The leather is very thick and I’ve worn them in snow, while stacking and chopping firewood, for mowing the lawn, taking hikes in the woods and pretty much any other kind of work around the house. Other than the usual “breaking in,” they’ve absorbed all the use without a problem. Third, the boot is warm. My feet haven’t felt cold while snow shoveling or playing with the kids in the snow. That includes trudging through 3-foot deep snow as well. Further, water does not penetrate the boot, even at the tongue which is webbed all the way up to the top of the boot. Fourth, the tread is very aggressive so the boot affords plenty of traction.

I can’t say these will be the last pair of boots I own because I know even these will eventually succumb. That said, I suspect it will be a long while before they do so and when they do finally go, I’ll be going right back to Georgia Boot for whatever their closest model to these are.

Basically, I have nothing negative to say about either of these items. Both have been put through their paces, especially this Winter, and both have easily been up to the task.

Roof Raking

For those of you in more temperate climates, “roof raking” is when one pulls several feet of snow off the edge of their roof. Contrary to your first hunch, the reason for roof raking has little to do with removing weight from the roof. Though that can be a secondary benefit if the rake is long enough.

The primary benefit is in the prevention of “ice dams.” Because heat escapes the house through the roof, even a well insulated house, the first several inches of snow right on the roof melt. Mostly during the day when there’s some additional help from the Sun. Even during the night, with enough snow and its insulating properties it is possible for snow to melt given enough heat in a house.

What then happens is exposed melting snow freezes and forms a dam either right at the gutter or at the edge of the roof line (some houses up here don’t have gutters). Once it freezes, it expands and in the worst case, the snow continues to melt further up the roof and feeds the dam. As the damn continues to form, the ice expands up under the shingles and eventually gets to the sheathing. Left alone long enough, the roof can be damaged to the point that it requires resheathing and reshingling. It’s also possible for gutters to collapse due the weight from the ice.

Those sorts of repairs are expensive, in case you’re wondering.

However, for a mere $40 a homeowner can obtain a roof rake. The rake is basically a “plow” style snow shovel reversed (so it plows when pulled instead of pushed) and attached to an expandable handle. Then, raking a roof is as simple as dropping the rake into the snow on the roof and pulling. Rinse, repeat. All the way down the roof line. Both sides. Times several hours, depending on how deep the snow up there is.

And sore shoulder muscles.

Very, sore, shoulder muscles.

I’m still enjoying this Winter, but roof raking is no fun. Did I mention that all that snow from the roof then has to go somewhere? Yep. That batch of snow gets moved twice. And it’s a lot heavier than the stuff already on the ground.

I’d rather rake leaves.

The past 24 hours has basically conspired to keep me from getting to this. But fear not! I have a few minutes free time and without further ado, here are the afore promised snow pictures.

Things That Don’t Suck

My Mother gave me a pair of StabilIcers as a gift this Winter. She didn’t want me slipping and falling on my head anymore.

When I first got them, my initial impression was they’d be too much of a hassle. I was incorrect. They are simple to put on. Further, they stay on without slipping or moving and they also come off with ease. I’ve worn them on hardpacked snow, ice and other frozen sorts of terrain thus far and they have performed splendidly. I used them today while shoveling and plowing and had no issues. In fact, once on I really don’t even notice them unless I walk on concrete or some such surface. They are also proving to be durable- neither the straps nor the rubber sole is showing any sort of wear thus far. And I’m not particularly kind to them.

Anyone looking for a good solution for Winter traction will be pleasantly surprised by these.

I LOVE This

I’m pretty much exhausted. The muscles in my back, shoulders, arms and legs all hurt from shoveling the snow. It took me about 3 hours to clear our driveway this morning and another 2 or so to clear parts of our deck and a path to our woodpile.

But it’s the most awesome Winter I can remember. I have vague recollections of the Blizzard of ’78. I also have other vague recollections of Winters with multiple big snow storms. But I was just a kid then. For all I know, big was 6″ of snow.

We have piles of snow that are at my eye level. Walking out into the pristine landscape, I easily sink in up to my knees. The dogs go out and have to bound through the snow. It is as high as their backs. Some of the piles are so high that they won’t even bother trying to go over.

I told the kids to enjoy this Winter as much as they can because they may never have another Winter like this one. But it was obvious that they didn’t comprehend my meaning. They’re still young, and the have so many Winters yet to go through. This is what Winter is for all they know.

They should be so lucky.

I’ve got a bunch of pictures to post, but that won’t be until later tonight. For now, I’m just reveling in our Winter wonderland.

Shocker of the Day

It’s snowing.

Oh- and it’s supposed to snow tomorrow. More film at 11.

On the plus side- at least temperatures are above 0.

The Wife on Fire

We sat down to dinner last night at a friends. Their child is all grow’d up. Well, in college anyway. So our kids were stand-ins for the evening. When the lass sat down, she saw an awful site on her plate.

Two slices of cooked carrots. Sitting their. Steaming. Delicious. (To everyone else at least.) She raised her voice to file a complaint.

The Wife immediately intoned “You have 2 pieces of carrot. One for each eye. OK?”

This caught the lass so flat footed, that she sat that staring at the Wife for what seemed like minutes, but in reality was only a few moments. Then, she cheerily replied “OH, OK Mom,” like the Wife’s statement was so obvious that the lass couldn’t believe she’d missed the connection. Of course there were 2 carrots- she had 2 eyes! DUH!

I had to applaud the faultless delivery and timing of the Wife’s comment. It’s just a rare event where the lass is stopped cold in her tracks like that. Rarer still that she actually ends up doing something she isn’t to keen on to begin with.

Championship Weekend Recap

Well, I only went 1 for 2 this weekend. Frankly, my 1 wasn’t the one I preferred. There just isn’t any reality in which I can root for the Steelers. I felt all year long that they over achieved. That’s likely what makes them so dangerous. On paper, it seems like their beatable. On the field, it’s a little harder. Perhaps the Jets were just too flat.

So given that, the question is, do I change my pick for a Super Bowl winner? It’s very tempting. Frnakly, I’ve got that nagging doubt in the back of my mind telling me not to bet against the Steelers in a Super Bowl. Especially with their defense. That said, the one kind of offense that has been successful against the Steelers this year is the kind of offense Green Bay is capable of playing. Further, Aaron Rodgers has been the best QB in the playoffs by far.

So, I’m going to stick with my Green Bay prediction. But I won’t be surprised in the slightest if the Steelers win again.

Oh, about the whole Jay Cutler brouhaha. All the objective evidence points to the fact the he’s a tough cookie. No, he wasn’t playing well. But all of his teammates (well, at least those quoted) had his back unequivocally. He’s taken more sacks and missed one game due to doctor’s orders (a concussion). Even former Denver teammates had nothing but positives to say.

I’d like to see Peter King or the guys at profootballtalk.com type on a keyboard with a torn MCL. My guess is they wouldn’t even make it to work. Let alone try to get out there and play football on it.

Huffle-Puff

This was too funny at the moment for me not to jot it down.

On the way home from the Derby, the lass started pitching a fit (after near perfect behavior at the Derby) because she wanted to go home and watch a movie instead of going ice skating. Nothing the Wife said could dissuade her from the snit she’d conjured and her answers were getting increasingly desperate, ridiculous and shrill because she was so set in her determination to not go skating.

It was around this time that I noticed the windows getting good and foggy. So I commented “Hey- who’s fogging up the windows?”

The Wife deadpanned in reply “Huffle-puff in the back.”

My laughter just started fading to a chuckle about the time we started going down our driveway.

For Posterity’s Sake

It was -9 degrees as of 7 o’clock this morning. But it’s been warming quickly. It’s already 14 degrees outside. I tried tossing boiling water into the air, but it still wasn’t cold enough to cause it all to turn into snow. Bummer.

The Pinewood Derby

The big day finally arrived yesterday. The boy and the lass got their shot at glory. I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out whose car is whose. I’m proud to say that all the painting, stickers and other decorations were accomplished by the kids. Only the smallest bit of help from us for minor things like cutting a sticker out of the sheet or something like that. Otherwise, the kids had full say.

The Cold Arrives

When we went to bed last night around 10:30, the temp was measuring at 20 degrees or so. Pretty cool, but no great shakes. Especially for this Winter.

I woke up around 4 this morning to tend our fire. While doing so, I checked the temperature again and it was 14 degrees.

Hmmmph. So much for the “cold,” I thought. I mixed up the coals so they could burn down some more then laid down on the couch to get a little more sleep. I sleep on the couch in the mornings like that so as not to wake the Wife with repeated trips out of bed. Besides, the couch is actually pretty comfortable when the fire is going.

I woke up again to load up the fireplace with would around 5:30. Once again, for HA-HA’s I checked the temperature.

8 degrees. The temp had fallen 6 degree’s in one-and-a-half hours. The same amount it had fallen in the 6 hours from when I went to bed to when I got up the first time.

As I sit here typing this, it’s now down to 4 degrees. The Sun is up, as is everyone else in the house. Now I get to take the boy to hockey.

My fire tending duties weren’t for naught.

Who Needs School?

Parent do!

Since last Wednesday the kids are on an impressive run, with a little help from MLK Day. They had school last Friday, then a delayed opening on Wednesday and a full day yesterday only to have school cancelled for today. For those keeping score, that’s 2.5 days in the last 10 and with the weekend it’ll become in the last 12. It’s an unofficial Winter vacation!

And from what I hear, there’s more snow on tap for next week. So their score is going to keep getting better. Which means they’ll be going to school into July at this rate.

Sledding

As I type this, I’m being bombarded with requests for food. I suppose their hunger is an indicator that night sledding was successful. After all, the only thing more fun than sledding is doing it in the dark!

It was something of an unexpected bonus that with the recent rain and wintry mix stuff, the snow now has a hard shell covering it that’s strong enough to support the kids whilst they walk on it. It also happens to be slick enough that they can slide down the hill on their stomachs. Naturally, that’s more fun than using a sled.

Earlier this week, we took them out to a public sledding hill. While we were there, conservatively about 25 other kids percolated through. The hill itself is long and fairly steep and the snow is packed down so the sledding is very fast. All the little bumps along the way down the hill were magnified into mini-ramps. Some older kids had piled snow into a couple of actual ramps, one of which allowed a daredevil to catch some pretty serious air. Many kids took their chances on that ramp, all with spectacular results regardless of whether they landed properly or on their ear.

The, er, downside of the hill is that it’s a looooong walk back up the hill. Especially if the sledder made it down the main portion to the flat where they could continue to slide for roughly half a football field. Try doing that in 15″ of snow with short legs. To their credit, it wasn’t long enough to dull their enthusiasm for the ride down.

More snow is forecast for tonight. All the more chance to forge new sled trails. Winter fun has only just begun.

Too Much Packer Optimism

In my previous post on football, I picked the Packers to win it all. Since then, I’ve noticed a lot of media people jumping on the bandwagon, talking about how great the Packers, and Aaron Rodgers particularly, are playing. I’ve even seen reports that Brett Favre thinks they’re the best team left in the playoffs.

If it gets much worse, I may have to rethink my pick. I think it was pretty clear that the Jets’ motivation was fed by the media narrative surrounding their game with the Patriots.

In other news, Patriot fans are sinking to new levels of pathetic. They’re blaming Belichik’s decision to bench Wes Welker for the opening series of the game this passed weekend for the loss. Truly, unbelievably, pathetic. Did any of those guys recall that the Pat’s opening drive marched right down the field and ended in a Brady pick? The mindset actually highlights one of my biggest pet peeves about most fans of winning teams- they assume that the reason for losses had nothing to do with the other team.

Brioche

I’ve never made brioche before. I only ever became aware of it from reading a book by Alton Brown. More recently, I was speaking with a hockey-Mom who bakes her own bread like myself and she spoke very highly of brioche. The Wife was so impressed that she started pushing me to bake a loaf, going so far as to dig up a couple of recipes on the web. I finally relented this passed weekend.

I don’t know if there is a classic brioche recipe out there. But the defining characteristics of a loaf are a dark, dark brown crust that is soft, an even crumb, a little bit of sweetness to the taste and a very soft texture. It’s like eating a pillow- without the feathers … or polyester.

Following is a recipe that I came up with based on the ones the Wife provided.

NFL Championship Games

HAH! 8 playoff games and I’m 6-2. Not bad. The two I whiffed could easily have gone the other way. Let’s just call it 8-0 for the heck-of-it.

I didn’t see the Patriots game because I was watching the rest of the family skate. But reading the little bit of commentary out there, Pats’ fans have nothing to go on. They flat out got whupped and their golden boy Brady coughed up a stinker exactly when he supposedly never does. My guess is the New England sphincter reflexively tightened when Brady threw the pick on their first possession. Oh well. At least they beat the Jets 45-3 back in the regular season!

So with that, two more games:

  • Packers over the Bears
  • Jets over the Steelers

Meaning the Packers will be the eventual Super Bowl champs.

See how easy this is?

Thoughts on Tiger Mothering

An article by Amy Chua has been getting a lot of attention for the past week. In the article, she describes a little of her parenting philosophy which includes some pretty strict control over her kids’ social lives, demanding A’s in school, and some pretty serious discipline when required. Mrs. Chua has a book coming out that the article is promoting, so perhaps some of the article can be explained as “not attention is bad attention.”

What struck me most about what she had to say in the article is that her approach to parenting is familiar to me. She sums it up pretty well with her final sentence:

By contrast, the Chinese believe that the best way to protect their children is by preparing them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can ever take away.

These are pretty much the goals the Wife and I have for our kids. We are not pushing them to become doctors, lawyers, musicians or athletes. Rather, we’re trying to equip them with skills that will allow them to succeed at whatever they do.

Cool Picture

It was actually colder when I went to get the picture, but I think my handling the thermometer raised the temp.  Negative temperatures aren’t all that common around these parts; though, we’ve been seeing negative temperatures more frequently in the last couple of years than I recall back in the 90’s and early 00’s.

Speaking of Jokes…

The boy has been telling jokes lately. Here’s a sample (actually, I suppose this one is more a riddle):

the boy: Dad, what flower do you have on your face?

me (after thinking): I don’t know.

the boy: A “tulip.” Get it? Because you have two lips…

me: Very clever.

More recently, he realized there’s another answer to his riddle: an “iris.” Get it? Because your eye has an iris…

So now we have no chance of getting the right answer.
