Touching the Sky

The one with it’s peak buried in the clouds is Mt. Washinton. We pulled over to take some pictures of the sky line; we were about 25 miles South of it.

Mountains

Whenever I’m in New Hampshire, I get strong feelings of contentment. There’s peace out here- a vastness that captures the imagination. The deeper one gets into the state, the more the signs of ‘normal’ simply disappear. Fellow auto travellers become sparse. Large urban areas reduce to small towns, which further reduce to the odd home whose closest neighbor is miles away. Pristine landscapes become the new normal. Then the mountains come in to view.

And as I drive through here a voice rises inside me, imploring I could live here. It feels right to be in this area…

“Mooommmmmm, are we close?”

Reality bites.

Vacation- The Adventure Begins!

We sprang is on the kids 2 nights ago. Surprisingly, we weren’t peppered with millions of questions like “Will there be beds at the hotel?” and “Will the hotel have chairs?” I was sure we’d get a million of those. Of course, we’re not there yet, so there’s plenty of time.

I’ll be bringing the EEE. So, assuming that there’s wifi at the hotel and I’m not too tired, I’ll still have web access.

For now, time to pack up the car…

Parental Self-Flagellation

There are days where I’m convinced it would have been better had I not gotten out of bed. Where everything is a fight and a struggle. Every little thing the kids do is wrong and my reaction to those things is no better. Heck, even the dogs are steering clear.

Why? What happens that everything if so off? So one of them spills milk. What’s the big deal? Then they pull an attitude and refuse to do anything about the spill. Is that my fault? Are they picking up on my own emotions, thus making them worse off? Is yelling at them for their intransigence really solving anything? Aren’t I just reinforcing a bad attitude as well as modeling exactly how not to deal with a bad situation?

Since, presumably, I’m the only grown-up around at that moment, why couldn’t I act the role? Why should I expect the kids to act the part when I’m incapable?

How do you turn this stuff around? An apology? Will they even understand what I’m apologizing for? Do I just force myself to take everything slowly? Can I right the ship just through an act of will? Against current that are clearly, for today, steering me towards snapping, anger and misdirected sarcasm?

These days where I’m at my worst, and everything that happens seems to drive me further down that path, are the hardest. To hear myself and be unable to stop. To know that I’m not dealing with things properly and feel a hopelessness that I can get it right is frustrating.

The answer is so simple. I tell it to the kids all the time.

Just stop.

But the execution is so difficult.

Python Class Attributes

While working on a piece of code, I ran into an unexpected bug- in my program not Python. I’ve since done some investigating and I’ve learned something about how Python deals with class attributes and instance attributes. Following is a little exposition of what I’ve learned.

The Lass’ Long Day

I’ve always considered the lass to be accident prone. Not that she’s a klutz. It has more to do with her constant struggle to keep up with her big brother. And the fact that it is physically impossible for her to remain still. To the point that I think there’s some sort of law involved where, if violated, the world might end. Or something. She’s constantly spilling drinks, bumping into things, falling down etc. She takes her lumps and soldiers on unperturbed.

Yesterday, though, was a day to remember even by her standards. There was the bloody nose, followed by falling off the play gym onto her face, and finally she nicked herself with scissors while helping the Wife in the garden. As I said, quite a day of achievement.

By the time the scissor event happened, she was done with outrage. She merely noted what happened to the Wife, who then took her inside to clean and bandage her finger. No fuss, no outrage. “I didn’t keep the point down” was the most she had to say. It was almost as if, after her previous run-ins of the day, it was to be expected and taken in stride.

So here’s to hoping for a reprieve for her. At least for today.

Jumanji and Zathura

Yes, they are both movie names. Jumanji was OK, never saw Zathura- although it just looked like the writers said “Wouldn’t it be cool if we cool if Jumanji had been done as a space game?”

But I digress- they are also most excellent pieces of software. Jumanji is another one of those minimalistic browsers along the lines of uzbl and surf. Zathura is a pdf viewer which I think capable of replacing xpdf. Both applications are very fast and very configurable and both seem to handle the majority of use cases for myself.

My only warning is that the documentation is a little thin. Both can be downloaded from the appropriately acronymed pwmt.org where you can either use git or download tarballs. If you’re wondering about the acronym thingy, you’ll have to pay the site a quick visit.

Grub Rescue Mode on AMD64

We had a little power outage last night so when I came down this morning, the computer was, naturally, off. Turn it on, wait for boot process to complete only to see the wonderful words:

Attempting to enter rescue mode

error: the symbol ‘grub_xputs’ not found

grub rescue>

Lovely way to start the weekend.

Not Quite What They Hoped For

The water arrived this morning and the pool was full in about 30 minutes. The kids were so excited that they just had to jump in right away. That hit a snag because the ladder for the first pool isn’t tall enough for the new pool. It took me some time to assemble the new ladder.

So shortly after I placed the new ladder into the pool, the kids learned that the pool still wasn’t to their liking. More specifically, the water is cold. North Atlantic cold. It did arrive fresh from a well this morning. It took the boy about 15 minutes to finally get off the ladder and he only lasted about 30 seconds in the water. The lass wasn’t much better, though she at least actually swam. Of course, the water is up to her shoulders, so she’s pretty much swimming already.

So now, the waiting game begins for how long it will take for the pool to warm up. The boy asks me every 15 minutes or so if the water is warmer. I find it hard to resist the temptation to tell him that it is. Of course, it’s only be fractions of a degree- but at least I’m technically accurate!

Site Update

Believe it or not, this site does get spam- comment spam to be specific. I don’t get tons and until today, I’d just dealt with it myself. But as of now I’ve enabled a spam filter for the site. I’ll monitor how it works and then decide if I’ll keep on with it.

If you post a comment and it does not show, it’s likely that the spam filter snagged it so don’t panic. Just let me know and I’ll deal with it.

New Pool

The new Easy Set pool arrived last night while we were out, so that will be the project du jour. The boy has already asked me approximately a half-million times when it will be set up. You’d think he’d never been in the water before. It’s looking a little overcast now, so I’ll probably get started on it shortly.

Then more power washing.

Good times. Good times.

Seriously

Prof. Bainbridge is skeptical about whether Republicans should return to control of Congress. I agree. The one chance they had to be serious about the budget, Paul Ryan’s plan, they couldn’t get away from it fast enough. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I’d say their plan is to grab control in the hopes the economy shakes off its current doldrums so they’ll be in position to claim credit.

Sorry, not interested.

I want to see proposals for spending cuts. I want to see healthcare reform repealed, or gutted to the point that it doesn’t matter. I want to see serious discussion about regulation that can be shed. I’d like to hear about bureaucracies and departments that can be closed forever. I want smaller government that encourages people to take responsibility for themselves.

No one in Congress right now is serious about any of that. In return, I’ll neither consider any of them serious, nor consider them seriously.

The Little Things

Kids are a pain, to a large extent. They constantly challenge for power and control. The bicker with one another about who gets the red popsicle. They scream to high heaven when the world doesn’t suit them- which is almost always. They are masters of confounding. They’ll ask simple question about things we as adults don’t give a second thought to; resulting in a flummoxing decision making process of whether to answer the question, whether the question is answerable, how to answer the question, etc.

But not infrequently, they do things that can’t help but make you smile from your head to your toes. The sort of thing where no matter what trials the child put you through during the day, it was all worth it for that fleeting moment of grace. The Wife had such an experience the other night.

On occasion, the Wife sings a lullaby to the lass before bed time. On this night, it was “You Are My Sunshine.” The lass always listens quietly and it always puts a smile on her face. When the Wife finished and said “Good night” to her, the lass asked simply:

“Mom, how come I make you happy when skies are gray?”

How to explain that the answer is because of questions like that?

Reality Distortion

Apple’s defense now, after the press conference on Friday, it to claim that all phones have attenuation problems. They even have video! John Gruber is in overdrive on the situation, with multiple links to videos with other phones who lose a couple of bars due to a “death grip.”

These are in addition to Apple calling out RIM and Nokia at the Friday press conference regarding a couple of their phones. They even posted some video showing how the signal gets attenuated, presumably causing a call loss.

It’s a good example of “the best defense is a good offense” and also of attempting to drag everyone else down into the muck. After all, if everyone else is guilty, then why single us out for scorn?

July- THBBBT!

Another July. Another heat wave. It’s official- July is my least favorite month. I’m doing my best not to complain, but if the Wife is any kind of judge then I’m failing pretty miserably at it. Even last July, which was much much cooler, sucked because it was 100% humidity all the time. This year, it’s not that humid all the time, but that’s because it’s 90 friggin degrees every day. And there’s no end in sight.

Perhaps when July 31 roles around, there will be.

Potato Pancakes

I’ve finally reverse engineered my Grandmother’s potato pancake recipe. Not that it’s that difficult; quite the contrary, it’s simple. The problem is each failed attempt makes it necessary to wait a bit longer on the next attempt because no one wants to eat them. Then, they’ve got a reputation for not being so good and no one’s willing to take a bite.

I knew I finally got it when I gave the Wife her serving and she stated “Wow, these are actually really good.” Score one for me. Also, I’m thinking the Sister will be most interested in this particular post, since of all us siblings, she enjoyed Grandma’s potato pancakes the most.

Reading is Hard- Clarification

After talking to Mom and the Wife, I just wanted to clarify that, while the boy does get frustrated with reading at times, the experience as a whole is not frustrating. The learning curve is steep, and he is definitely making progress.

The overall point of the post was that learning to read is difficult because there are no hard-and-fast rules regarding pronunciation. Just about any arbitrary letter combination has multiple exceptions that must be memorized. Really, it’s an exercise in the student recognizing the printed version of a spoken word. After that, it becomes possible to make educated guesses regarding pronouncing a new word.

Hope that makes more sense.

Apple Press Conference

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m breathless with anticipation for Apple’s press conference today about the iPhone4. I barely slept last night thinking about it.

Apple’s predicament strikes me as a textbook case where a company has to simply accept defeat. The story has clearly taken on a life of it’s own and, regardless of Apple’s insistence that overall reception is improved, the perception is that the iPhone4 (fairly or not) has antenna issues. To not accept this reality means Apple will continue to get hen-pecked to death by critics saying “there’s a problem” while Apple continues to deny or belittle. That is a battle they cannot win.

So in order to turn the tide, they have to grit there teeth and accept the fact that a not-insignificant portion of their user base is seeing a problem. A solution is to offer a case or cover for free to all current iPhone4 users as well as hand out a free one with future phones. Perhaps they’ll have a better solution.

Regardless, they have to take ownership of the problem and make it crystal clear that they are doing so. If they don’t their problems will only get worse.

And with that, back to breathlessly anticipating…

Gulf Well Leak Stopped

Just saw it reported on TWC that the well leak has been stopped. Judging by how quickly the conversation turned to the relief well, I’d say that it’s a day-to-day thing. Certainly, BP isn’t going to get cocky at this stage. Still, it’s welcome news. Here’s hoping there’s no problems with the relief well and that it’s just a cleanup operation from here on out.

Reading Is Hard

Teaching the boy to read is a rewarding but arduous task. I’ve never thought about it before, because I never had to. But as I’ve been sitting and helping him to sound out words and the like, I’ve come to realize just how difficult reading English is.
