Where’s Sparky?

The kids woke up and immediately went to check out the Elf- who was NOT in his spot!

So began the great Elf hunt. Where was he? Why wasn’t he back from visiting Santa? Is he coming back? What will happen if he doesn’t come back? OK, maybe it wasn’t SO great since it only lasted about 20 minutes.

Eventually he was spotted when I asked the lass to check out the temperature outside. There he was, perched up on the shelf above the thermometer, carefully noting all that was going on in the house. The kids stared at him for a few moments, assessing the unexpected revelation that Sparky was not where he had been left last night.

How come he changed positions? Why is he over there? Can he talk to us now? I want to ask him about Santa! Can I ask him for more toys?

Thanks Sis.

Family Visits

The dearth of posting over the past couple of days was due largley to a visit with the family over the weekend. We got there late Thursday night and got back home late Sunday evening. Among other niceties, I finally got to watch some college football- and they were good games as well.

As it happens, Santa had his elves make an early visit to my parent’s home since somehow he knew the kids were going to be there. The boy and the lass were both trying to reconcile that. How’d he know they were going to be there?

They’ll just have to keep wondering.

The Shelf Elf

We just started a new family Christmas tradition. The Sister actually clued us into this particular piece of magic. One of her friends has been doing it with her kids for a couple of years and they’ve enjoyed it. The sister plans on starting it with her kids in a year or so.

I am speaking of the Shelf Elf.

Timestamp Test

Checking how timestamping works.

UPDATE: Interesting, putting NO timestamp info in the post object sent to the XML RPC results in the post being published immediately. This means the logical thing to do is not include timestamping unless someone wants to schedule a post for publishing.

First blogtools.py Post

If the program works, then this is my first published post using a python program I’m working on and, for now, call blogtools. Now that I’ve been posting for awhile, I’ve got a decent idea for what I need in a blog client- not that much. The fact is that I don’t do a lot of fancy visual stuff ’round these parts. Every now and again, I include a piece of code, or a quote, and use some “pre” tags to do that. Even more infrequently, I put some pictures in a post.

So an honest appraisal is that all I really need is a text editor for writing a post and a way to get the post to the blog. Well, we’ve got xmlrpc for the latter. For the former, if there’s one thing that Linux accels at, it is providing ways to write text files: vim, emacs, nano, ed to name a few.

Does he Know Something?

We have our first parent-teacher tonight for the Boy. Apparently he is keenly aware of this fact based on the following exchange we had:

“Dad, do you know when you’re supposed to go to my school?”

“Ummm, what do you mean?”

“You know, when you’re going to meet with my teacher so she can tell you how good I’ve been.”

Could he really have figured out the the whole thing at such a shockingly early age?

The Entitlement Problem

I went to the Y with the Boy the morning. Played some racquetball with him before I brought him up to the child-watch so I could practice a little and then do some other conditioning work before heading home. On the way in, he asked if he could swipe the card at the front desk. Naturally, I let him.

Of course, if the Lass had been there she would have demanded that she be the one to get to swipe the card. I’m guessing that most parents of more than 2 kids who are of comparable age and ability run into this phenomena. Pick any relatively trivial task and assign it to child A. Child B will, shortly thereafter, decide that they’d like to give it a try. Child A will defend their turf viciously- asking if they can do said task up to days in advance (if possible) so they can maintain an edge over their sibling.

The sucker punch of the situation is to play Solomon and let them alternate doing the task.

This seemingly reasonable approach opens up the “He did it last time, I get to do it this time!” wars. Woe be to the parent that forgets whose turn it is. The child, who can barely remember to brush their teeth after breakfast, will retain a detailed history of who did what and when. The ultimate mistake here is to brush off the “turn” thing with “Well, you did this other thing today, so we’ll let your brother/ sister do this now.” There is no bartering in the world of entitlements.

Ironically, the only sane path through all of this ridiculousness is to take the task away from them both. This approach consistently causes no fits, tears, silent treatment. It’s almost like they never really wanted to do it in the first place. Shame on you for trying to give them something different to do.

Pat’s 4th Down Call

I didn’t see the end of the game- stopped watching in the 3rd quarter. So I missed the fireworks in the 4th quarter. Thanks to the wonders of the internet I’ve been able to read up on the game and I’ve decided that Belichik made a defensible call. If Manning hangs 17 points on your defense in the 4th quarter, including a near 80-yard drive in 1:47, then I think as a coach you have to be thinking that whether Manning gets it at his 30 or your 30, he’s going to drive for a touchdown. Conversely, a 2-yard conversion for an offense that’s rolled up 450 yards looks like real makeable.

Not a conventional call, but a defensible one.

UPDATE: Having read more opinions, plus listening to a nearly apoplectic Ted Johnson on the radio, I’ve come to the conclusion that this was right call. Understand, I’m not a Belichik apparatchik nor am I a Pats fan of any note.

Listening to all the callers and opinions, it seems to be nearly unanimous that had the Pats punted the outcome would be a done deal. Apparently Pats’ fans had forgotten the AFC championship game from a few years back, or other games where Manning had victimized them in quick strike fashion (I can think of another game where the Colts marched down and it took a goal line stand for the Pats to preserve the win.) Let alone the two previous 4th quarter touchdown drives from the game. Giving Manning the ball with almost 2 minutes to go, probably on his 30 with a timeout in hand are not odds you want to bet against. Much as he is reviled, Manning knows how to work in that situation and he has long since cast off his Pat’s hex.

I think Belichik made the call because it was his best chance to win. They had racked up over 450 yards of offense to that point. They’ve made 4th down conversions all year long. Indeed, they have one of the best offenses in the league. They had scored 34 points. Moving the ball was not an issue. Pressure was not an issue. The calculus was simple- he was confident they could get two yards, when they needed it, against anyone. Why give the ball back to Manning when they don’t have to? If (when in Belichik’s mind) they make, the game is over.

This move was the ultimate “aggressive” play calling move. Really, in that situation putting his defense back on the field is playing “not-to-lose” instead of for the win. He bucked conventional wisdom here, but his doing so doesn’t show lack of confidence in his defense or arrogance regarding his own play calling ablilities. It was a decision to give his team the best chance to win a game. That’s what good coaches do.

Add a Little Glue

Finally, today, a little gluing. A lot of milling and fitting and cutting and thinking has gone into this thing thus far. It’s funny, when asked about it I usually reply “It’s not that complicated, all it I’m doing is building boxes.” Well, taking a look at all the mortises in the posts and the tenons on the stretchers and the extra milling to tenons to get everything to fit together properly, it’s clear that it’s a little more than building boxes.

At this point, pictures are more clear than words, so here we go.

No More USC

At long last, we won’t be talking about USC in a national title game. Maybe the pollsters will even boot them out of the top 10! Stanford 55- USC 21. The best part is that they it’s a total blowout. Not even competitive in the game. Guess everyone will have to find someone else to fawn over while the usual suspects all talk about how and when USC will reclaim their “magic” or whatever other adjective they decide on.

Looks like the National Championship game will be the SEC title game between Alabama and Florida. I like ‘Bama in this one. Can’t really give any tangible reasons, just my sense of things right now. Obviously keep that grain of salt handy…

It won’t be this year, but perhaps next year we’ll finally see Ohio St fall from grace as well. They’ve had a pretty long run up there at the top of college football. Too bad for Iowa.

I wonder if there’s a discernable pattern of programs rising to and falling from elite status. Just off the top of my head- there was Nebraska and Florida St in the 90’s, now USC and Ohio St in the 00′, Michigan had about a ten year run, seems to me Texas is at similar point. Probably a completely unquantifiable combination of recruiting talent, hunger of said talent based on the programs success, and strength of competition. Basically the sort of thing that an avid watchers ‘gut’ might get a feel for. But then, note that I’m only observing the pattern using hindsight rather than boldly predicting the fall of these programs. Along those lines I’d guess at problems for Penn St, Florida and Texas in the next season or so.

The Drawer Slides

I didn’t get a chance to mention, but the Blum drawer slides have arrived. Holy moly, they are HEAVY. I pulled them out and now I can understand why they’re rated for 100 pounds.

The down side of their sturdiness is that they take up a lot of room. The upshot is that I’m going to lose at least an inch of space on inside height of the drawers because of the size of the slides. Normally, for drawers of the size I’ll be making for the armoire, I’d leave about 3/8″ to support the drawer bottom. With the slide size, I’ll have to leave considereably more so the slides can fit on the bottom of the drawer.

It’s a bit of a bummer because I had originally thought the drawers would be a little oversized compared to what I’ve seen for similarly designed armoires. That extra space is going to be used up accomodating the slides.

The good news is that I can definitely get some assembly done now. I’ll post pics when I can.

The Lass’s Phase

The lass is going through a phase. I recognize this phase because the boy went through it long ago. We survived his assault, I reckon we’ll survive her assault.

That doesn’t mean it will be more enjoyable the second time around.

Clearly there comes a point in a young child’s life where they really start to assert independence. Or at least the attempt to. Right now, the lass wants to control every aspect of her existence. What she wears, what she eats, which car she sits in, what games are played, who she plays them with, whether she gets ready for bed before her brother… Think of something and she has an opinion on her role regarding it.

Obfuscated C

When I started learning to program in C, I was fortunate enough to stumble across a gem of a book called “Expert C Programming: Deep C Secrets.” It has a picture of a selakant on the cover. The author has a great sense of humor, but most importantly it has all kinds of good tips for beginner C programmers looking to improve their knowledge.

In one particular chapter, he talks about the IOCCC. The first piece of code he writes about is the following was the winning entry from 1987 by David Korn:

main() { printf(&unix["\021%six\012\0"], (unix)["have"] + "fun" - 0x60); }

I actually compiled and ran it at the time and it prints the word “unix.” I was never able to figure out how the whole thing worked out though. Time passed and I forgot about it.

Well, not entirely. Today, while working on a piece of code, I finally thought to google the thing today. Lo and behold, there is an explanation for how it works. If you’re curious, here it is.

Quick Thoughts on Football

Having finished up thing fairly early yesterday, I got a chance to sit down and catch some football for awhile. The Patriot game was the only interesting one available and it looked to me like vintage Patriot football where they slowly strangle the other team as the game goes on. Even though theoretically the Dolphins were in the game, it never really felt like they had a chance. If the team continues like this, I won’t be surprised to see them in the Super Bowl again.

I watched about two thirds of the Cowboy/ Eagles game last night as well. When I turned it off, I was pretty sure that the Eagles were going to pull away. I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I saw that the Cowboys had not only won, but they’d managed the win in a way they’ve been unable to since Romo has been QB. He had a tough game last night but still managed to get the job done.

Of course, these were just the eighth games of the season, so there’s still plenty of football to play. For the Cowboys, December still looms. Unless they can actually win games then, they won’t be doing anything. For the Patriots, I wouldn’t expect them to have mental problems, but physically they’re an older team. The latter haf of the season will show how much those guys still have in the tank.

As a sort of one-off, kind of a bummer that Penn St lost to Ohio St this weekend. I thought they’d been looking pretty good this year- but they pulled a real stinker in that one. About time that Iowa lost. I was getting sick of hearing about them. Looks like the SEC championship will be the National title game as well. Sorry BCS, that’s just the way the ball rolls.

Learn to Skate

The boy had his first skating lesson today. The ice time lasted about an hour- although he and the 30 or so other first timers had all had enough after 45 minutes. There were no formal lessons or anything. The class basically consisted of suiting all the kids up and getting them on the ice. There were about 10 to 15 or so experienced skaters on the ice with them. They busied themselves by going from kid to kid making sure they all got a little one-on-one time. Mostly, though, it was obvious that the idea was to let the kids figure it out for themselves. That seemed about right. By the end, the boy actually finally did a little skating; regardless, he was cold, wet and ready to stop.

The most amusing moment came at the 45 minute mark when I happened to survey the ice. I’d say, conservatively, 90% of the kids were either laying, kneeling, or sitting on the ice. They’d all had it and were ready for ice time to be over.

Armoire Update

Having decided on and ordered the drawer slides, I had hoped I would finally be in position to get some gluing done. No such luck. I did finish the supports for the drawer slides which now leaves the drawers and the top as the main items left to works on. The reason I didn’t get any of the glue-up done is that I couldn’t get the material I wanted for the drawer separators and back.

The Boy’s Day

We didn’t actually mention his playdate to him until the morning of. Upon learning, he started vibrating with excitement. From that point, he was pretty easy to motivate through his brief morning at the house- he didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize going to his friend’s house. So after getting dressed and scarfing down a breakfast that I don’t think he really tasted, he settled into watching the TV and asking when we were leaving every 5 minutes.

BloGTK2- Follow-up

I posted a review about a month ago on BlogGTK2. I thought I’d add a couple of things since I’ve been using it for about a month now. Mainly, it’s crash prone. One scenario is writing a new post, posting and then attempting to start another post. This sequence will crash the program every time. This bug can be worked around by opening multiple windows prior to doing anything else. I use this trick in order to cross post between my two blogs.

Also, attempting to access the “Extended” or “Preview” tabs in the post editor causes the program to crash on my system. Kind of a bummer. The “Preview” feature isn’t really necessary so it doesn’t bug me. I work around the “Extended” crash by entering the HTML for extended entries manually in the “Main” tab.

Other than those stability issues, I don’t have any additional complaints. I’m still using it to post from my EEE and it works, within bounds I’ve outlined that is. I do wish there was better way for placing pictures in the posts, perhaps that will be added.

At any rate, it’s still better than the alternatives I’ve looked at. I won’t be leaving it behind any time soon.

A Play “Date”

Emphasis on date, definitely. The boy has been after me for the past few weeks because he’s been wanting to have a friend over. The first time he mentioned it, he claimed that the girl’s parents had already given permission and all we needed to do was let her come over. The girl’s Mom’s response to this news was “First I’ve heard of it” though it wasn’t the first time she’d heard the boy’s name.

Well, his friend got sick and missed some school so the whole thing was put on the backburner for a week or so. But he didn’t stop asking about having his friend over. I finally was able to speak with the Mom a second time and learned that the girl picks flowers to give to the boy on the bus because they usually sit on the bus together. For his part, the boy did a picture for the girl.

He picked a page from one of his dinosaur coloring books, took a red marker and wrote his name on the page with a little heart after his name. Then he drew a smiley face on the page and had me tear it out so that he could put it in his backpack to give to his friend.

So the two are set for their play date for Friday. The boy will be going to visit over there and they’ll be able to get on the bus together.

Should be an interesting day.
